I am excited to share that this week marked my first week as a Level 3 Supervisor Apprentice at RHS Garden Rosemoor! 🌿

Over the next three years, I’ll rotate through different departments, developing my skills across ornamental, edibles, nursery and more. I’m starting my first placement in the Nursery, which I’m particularly excited about. I love propagating plants, and I’m looking forward to learning how the nursery cares for many of the garden’s National Plant Collections, as well as getting to know the alpine collection, a whole new world for me!

So many new plants to learn, skills to develop and opportunities ahead. I’m very excited for this next chapter with the RHS and to be settling into life in North Devon! 🌱

HM Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Garden 👑🌿

Opened this year to celebrate the service of HM Queen Elizabeth II, this beautiful drought-tolerant garden is already looking fantastic.

What I love most is that the site was once a Royal Parks nursery, with the old concrete crushed and reused as planting aggregate.

The design has been carefully considered for a sustainable future. There is a range of hot, dry and shaded areas, ponds, meadows and spaces to sit and connect with nature.

It is a really special addition to London. I can’t wait to return and watch it establish and mature. 🌱👑

Thank you to everyone who came to see Ezra and me off on Friday evening. ❤️

It’s hard to believe how fast those 18 months have flown by. I started this role aged just 17 and looking back, I’ve learnt, grown and experienced so much, and I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to do this apprenticeship.

It’s such a strange mix of emotions! Sadness, gratitude and disbelief knowing I won’t be coming back in on Monday.

Fulham Palace really has felt like a family, and I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported me, taught me and made these past 18 months so special. I’ll leave with so many memories, lessons and friendships that I’ll carry with me into what comes next. 🌿

Yesterday afternoon I was fortunate to visit the gardens at Hurlingham Club in Fulham, thanks to an invite from a FP volunteer gardener. 🌿

It was really interesting to see how the garden is coping with the heat and chat to some of the team about their approach to watering. They’ve been watering regularly to keep the borders and some of their newer planting schemes looking good. They have a lake and borehole which they source water from, but are concerned about some of their woody collections and other areas where water is less accessible.

The Hurlingham lawns were often spoken about at college as being maintained to an incredibly high standard. They really are perfect but it was slightly strange seeing so much green grass in such a severe drought!

This week marks my last week as a Garden Apprentice at Fulham Palace 🌿

It’s been an amazing nearly 18 months, and I honestly can’t believe how quickly it’s gone! I came into this role with relatively little experience, having only done voluntary community gardening & allotmenting, and I’m leaving having grown so much both professionally and personally.

I’ll be making the most of my final week and enjoying every last moment before the next chapter begins! 🌱

A weekend walk at Wisley 🌿

Despite the drought, the gardens are still looking really good! RHS Garden Wisley is always a great place to visit for some horticultural inspiration, and I’m particularly in love with their Albizias. Wisley actually holds the Plant Heritage National Collection for the genus, so there are some really impressive specimens to see! 🌺

Upon inspecting the vines growing in our Tudor courtyard, we’ve discovered a fantastic crop of grapes! We train these vines using the double Guyot system, a form of grape pruning, but this year they’ve grown rather rampant. While pruning them back into shape, I stumbled across some pretty impressive bunches of grapes. With the weather we’ve had this year, it seems almost idyllic for a crop like this.

There’s actually a fascinating history to grape growing at Fulham Palace. Grapes have been grown here since at least the 16th century, when Bishop Edmund Grindal cultivated vines and sent grapes from Fulham Palace to Queen Elizabeth I. Growing them in our Tudor courtyard is a nod to this rather historic but interesting tradition! 🍇
