Spring has arrived, and the garden is waking up! ☀️🌿 But the start of the season isn’t always easy—muscles ache, mornings are chilly, and you wonder if everything you planted made it through the winter.

Do you think your garden has nesting species for native bees and other insects?

Here are a few common native plants to look for:
-Milkweed
-Anise Hyssop
-Monarda

Keep your eyes out especially for Aster family parennials and soft wood plants (like sumac and elderberry) with pith-filled or hollow stems. Native bees will excavate a nesting cavity in these stems 🐝

Our next tip for an eco-conscious Spring trim down is to find nesting sites in your garden.

Our native bees and other insects use hollow stems in your garden to nest in. They need these stems to stay up. So how do you find them?

Talk a walk through the garden and snap stems at waist or thigh height. Look inside the stem.

If the stem has a hole in the middle (like a drinking straw), mark them. This is a nesting site! For these plants, you can trim them but you want to leave at least 18" of stalk still attached to the base of the plant.

Insects use hollow plant stems to keep safe and warm during the cooler temps. Leaving "holey" stems preserves their nesting site.

If you’d told me in the early days of Vivant that I would meet these two heroes, I’d have laughed and said “wouldn’t that be nice?”

But here we are and in two weeks I’ve had the privilege to study with the unforgettable of and to meet of .

They say never meet your heroes. But the beauty of gardeners if that they cultivate the best characteristics of themselves alongside their gardens. I’ve yet to feel disappointed in meeting mine.

So thankful for the garden teachers in my life.
