For over a decade, Foster + Partners has been developing an architecture of care, which re-casts the hospital as a humane and civilised place. The Covid-19 pandemic has reinforced the need for flexible and comfortable healthcare buildings, which restore the instinctive human/nature connection. Studies have proven the benefits of embracing natural elements in our built environment; regular connections with nature can bring down anxiety levels, lower blood pressure and reduce stress hormones.

Sulis Hospital Bath is a quietly revolutionary building which incorporates biophilic design to enhance wellbeing and improve recovery times for patients.

Originally commissioned by Circle Health Group in 2009, as part of a privately funded initiative, the hospital has been delivering a holistic approach to healthcare for over 12 years. In 2021, it was bought by the Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Foundation. This acquisition has grown the hospital’s services, increasing capacity at the facility for both NHS and private patients.

Darron Haylock, Partner at Foster + Partners, revisited Sulis Hospital to speak with specialists about their experience of working at the hospital and how the environment can help patients feel less anxious and more comfortable from the moment they arrive.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) has selected CannonDesign in association with Foster + Partners to design its new 30+ story Cancer Care Pavilion devoted exclusively to patient care on MSK’s flagship Manhattan campus.

Driven to ultimately find a cure for cancer, MSK is one of the world’s most respected comprehensive centers devoted exclusively to cancer. Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States and the Pavilion will empower MSK to deliver on its mission of revolutionizing the understanding of cancer as a disease and improving the ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat it. This expansion will be designed to address the evolving cancer care needs over the next century.

Foster + Partners’ approach to healthcare projects is founded on a belief that the quality of the built environment has a direct relationship with the quality of life.

Foster + Partners completes Park Avenue’s first full-block building in over 50 years.

The 47-story tower was designed in close collaboration with L&L Holding’s project team. It includes a triple-height lobby, world-class office accommodation, external green spaces, an expansive social amenity level and a 38-foot-tall penthouse floor. Built to LEED Gold standard, the building recently earned Well Core certification at Gold level, in recognition of its features which enhance the health and wellbeing of occupants.

“425 Park Avenue celebrates its historic context and the restrained elegance of its landmark neighbours, while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of workplace design and reflecting the contemporary spirit of the city. The building’s architectural form and structural expression are inextricably linked, providing it with a distinctive identity. The floors with external terraces are the first of their kind on Park Avenue, creating a permeable and healthy working environment.”
Norman Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman, Foster + Partners

How is data science allowing designers to pioneer a new course for the development of cities?

In our latest +Plus Journal article, Laura Narvaez Zertuche and Mateo Neira – part of the Urban Design Group at Foster + Partners – explain how their team is turning information into insight, and how these insights allow us to create healthier, happier and more sustainable cities.

The Urban Design Group at Foster + Partners has a long history of working across cities and scales, from complex buildings and small-scale public realms to the creation of new cities and large-scale strategic planning.

Foster + Partners has completed Varso Tower, at 310 metres it is the tallest tower in the European Union.

“We are so proud to be part of this development. Our client HB Reavis has been a fantastic champion of the project throughout and our local collaborators at Epstein and Buro Happold have worked tirelessly alongside us. We believe that the tower, filled with activity and featuring extraordinary rooftop public spaces will make a strong, positive contribution to this wonderful city. We hope that it will become a hub for local and international business and a symbol for contemporary Poland.”
Grant Brooker, Head of Studio, Foster + Partners

The building achieves BREEAM Outstanding and WELL Gold certification, due in part to its triple-glazed façades.

Foster + Partners has completed the new headquarters for DJI, the world’s leader in civilian drones and creative camera technology. Located in the Nanshan District in southwest Shenzhen, China, the two towers – 44 and 40 storeys respectively – are set to become the ‘heart of innovation’ for the company and form a creative community in the sky.

The building’s functions include offices, research labs, test flight area, staff training, and public facilities. At 105 metres, the towers are linked by a 90-metre-long suspension sky-bridge, a lightweight element that creates an elegant connection between the two volumes. At the top of the floating volumes, skygardens provide private outdoor spaces for staff.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of the American Air Museum, UK we look back at the RIBA Stirling Prize winning project and offer the opportunity to explore the museum in 360VR.

Duxford airfield in Cambridgeshire was a Battle of Britain fighter station. Later, as one of a hundred US Airforce bases in Britain, it was the headquarters of the 78th Fighter Group. Now maintained by the Imperial War Museum, it has the finest collection of American aircraft outside the United States. Nineteen of its thirty-eight aircraft are airworthy, and it attracts over 350,000 visitors each year to its summer air displays. The centrepiece of the collection is also the largest − a B-52 bomber.

'The success of this project lies in the resonance between the elegant engineered form of the building and the technically driven shapes of the aeroplanes. The building itself sustains the fascination of these objects.' RIBA Stirling Prize jury 1998.
