What are ‚B’ statuses in ISO 19650?

Not every project reaches full authorisation in a single step.

Some organisations use B statuses to indicate information that has achieved a degree of authorisation or acceptance, but where conditions, limitations or outstanding elements still exist.

Common examples include:
• B1 – Partially authorised/accepted at Stage 1
• B2 – Partially authorised/accepted at Stage 2
• B3 – Partially authorised/accepted at Stage 3
• B4 – Partially authorised/accepted at Stage 4
• B5 – Partially authorised/accepted at Stage 5
• B6 – Partially authorised/accepted at Stage 6
• B7 – Partially authorised/accepted at Stage 7

The important lesson isn’t memorising every code. It’s understanding that information maturity develops progressively throughout the lifecycle of an asset.

*The exact meaning depends on the project’s information standard and approval process.

The BIM Codes behind Formal Approval!

After ‚S’ statuses come the ‚A’ statuses.

‚A’ statuses are commonly associated with formally authorised and accepted information.

A1 – Authorised and accepted at Stage 1
e.g. „Preparation & Brief”. Suitable for use as formally approved information associated with Stage 1 deliverables.

A2 – Authorised and accepted at Stage 2
e.g. „Concept Design”. Suitable for use as formally approved information associated with Stage 2 deliverables.

A3 – Authorised and accepted at Stage 3
e.g. „Spatial Coordination”. Suitable for use as formally approved information associated with Stage 3 deliverables.

…and so on.

Many practitioners incorrectly think:
S4 → A4

However, the workflow is actually:

S4 = Suitable for Stage Approval
A4 = Authorised and Accepted for Stage 4

Those are not the same thing.

S4 is asking for approval.

… but A4 confirms approval has been achieved!

***Exact status conventions vary between organisations, clients, countries and project requirements. Always follow the project’s agreed information management procedures.

S7: The Status that impacts Operations!

S7 represents information progressing toward authorisation within the Asset Information Model (AIM).

This stage becomes particularly important during handover and operations because the focus is no longer just project delivery. The information is now supporting the long-term operation of the asset.

The quality of information at this stage can directly affect:
• Facilities Management
• Maintenance Planning
• Asset Performance
• Lifecycle Management
• Future Decision-Making

This is where long-term value begins!

When Information becomes Authorised!

‚S6’ status represents information moving toward formal authorisation within the Project Information Model (PIM)

At this stage, confidence in the information is increasing and it is progressing through controlled authorisation processes before being used more widely across the project.

This status enables people to know which information can be trusted and used for decision-making.

This is where Decisions get serious!

‘S4’ status code is typically used when information reaches a formal stage approval gateway.

By this point, the information has usually gone through significant internal review, coordination and validation. It is no longer simply being developed or discussed, but it is progressing through a formal approval process linked to a specific project stage.

This is where commercial, technical and operational decisions may be made based on that approved information!

The BIM Status where decisions are made!

‘S3’ is used when information is shared specifically for review & comment.

At this stage, teams may still be evaluating options, reviewing risks and gathering feedback before progressing further. The information is not yet approved, but it is ready for meaningful discussion.

In my experience, some of the best project conversations happen during this stage because teams still have the opportunity to challenge assumptions, identify risks and improve outcomes before decisions are locked in.

S2 doesn’t mean Approved in BIM!

S2 information is generally suitable for reference, planning and broader project awareness. It can help teams understand sequencing and project context, but it does not automatically represent formal approval or authorization for construction.

S1: The moment BIM becomes Collaborative

S1 signals that information is suitable for coordination, allowing architects, engineers, contractors and other disciplines to begin relying on each other’s work. While the design may still evolve, S1 means that the information has reached a level of maturity appropriate for multidisciplinary coordination.

Understanding S1 helps teams reduce assumptions, improve collaboration and make coordination far more effective across a project.

Why ‘S0’ causes so much Project Confusion?

‘S0’ status means the information is still being developed internally and is not yet intended for wider project coordination. When unfinished information starts circulating too early, misunderstandings, incorrect assumptions and coordination issues can quickly follow.

Understanding information status is fundamental to effective BIM and ISO 19650 information management.

What makes a Project truly Successful?

The strongest projects I’ve worked on weren’t defined by software, model size or technology.

They were the projects where people trusted the information they were using to make decisions!
