Building my own cabinet design software 👀

Got tired of calculating cutlists manually and trying to figure out the best way to cut boards with minimal waste — so I started building a tool that does it for me.

You design the unit, set your dimensions, and it spits out every panel, drawer box, edge banding length... then nests everything onto sheets automatically.

Still a work in progress but it’s already saving me time (and boards).

❌ Flat-pack furniture won’t do this.
✅ Bespoke carpentry will.

Most people think MDF is “cheap material” — but the truth is, it’s one of the best foundations for projects like this: durable, smooth for painting, and perfect for clean shaker detail. Add hidden storage, finger-pull flaps, and an L-shaped layout that actually works with your home.

That’s the difference between made-for-you and made-for-mass-production.

I just open SketchUp, click around, move stuff.
Most of the time it looks weird.
Sometimes it works.

This one?
I don’t know.

Some people say it looks clean.
Some say too boxy.
Someone told me “it’s too symmetrical, not modern enough.”

But I like it.
I like that the glass goes in the middle.
I like that I could design this whole thing.

And if someone says
“Can you make me one like this for my house?”
Then that’s a win.

This is what I’m trying to figure out…
Can we take all those years of building, fitting, cutting
and turn them into design work?
Digital work?

But maybe I can still build things.
Just in a different way.

It’s interesting how one small change can completely transform the atmosphere of a room.

Take this lower cabinet next to the chimney breast, for example.
