Small rooms often have some of the biggest demands placed on them. A compact WC, cloakroom, utility space or mud room still needs to feel practical, comfortable and considered.

From an architectural point of view, a few design choices make a big difference:

🚪 Use pocket or sliding doors where swing space is limited
🧺 Build storage into walls, under stairs or around awkward corners
🚿 Choose wall-mounted fittings to free up floor space
💡 Plan lighting carefully to make smaller rooms feel brighter and more open
🪞 Use mirrors, glazing and lighter finishes to increase the sense of space
🪵 Keep materials consistent so compact areas feel connected to the rest of the home
📐 Design every centimetre around how the space will be used day to day

Small spaces should never feel like an afterthought. With the right layout and detailing, they become some of the most useful areas in the home.

A mud room does not need a large footprint to make everyday life feel more organised. At Gubyon Ave, this compact space works hard with built-in storage, wall hooks, a deep sink and a bench for shoes and bags.

The soft green cabinetry, warm timber flooring and brass detailing keep it practical without losing character, while everything has a clear place to live.

Good design is often about making smaller spaces work smarter.

CLIVE ROAD: Bold Choices, Beautifully Balanced

Charcoal cabinetry, a concrete-effect island, and warm copper accents proof that darker kitchens can feel bright and welcoming when you get the light right.

Full-height sliding glazing wraps the corner, pulling in daylight and framing the garden so the whole space feels open rather than closed in. Tan leather stools soften the industrial edge, and everything is tucked away behind handleless fronts, so surfaces stay calm and clutter-free.

So many people play it safe with kitchens, worried a bold choice will date. Done thoughtfully, it won't it'll feel like yours.

Holland Park, where lighting becomes part of the architecture

What we like most about this project is how the lighting helps define each space, adding warmth, focus and character without competing with the architecture.

Statement pendants draw attention to key areas, softer lighting creates a relaxed atmosphere, and the feature chandelier gives the living space a strong focal point. Together, the lighting works with the clean lines, neutral palette and open layout to make the home feel polished, welcoming and comfortable throughout the day.

Good lighting should do more than brighten a room. It should support how the space is used and help the architecture feel complete.

What we like most about Tanners Yard is the balance between old and new.

The exposed brickwork gives the kitchen warmth and a strong sense of character, while the clean cabinetry, white worktops and dark handles keep the space feeling fresh and practical. The herringbone timber floor adds another layer of texture and helps tie the whole scheme together.

For us, successful renovation is about respecting the building’s story while making everyday life easier, with thoughtful storage, durable finishes and a layout that feels natural to use.

We love this because beauty in architecture isn't something you add at the end it comes from getting the fundamentals right first.

People often come to us wanting a certain look, when what's really bothering them is how their home works: the awkward kitchen, the cluttered hallway, the extension that added space but not joy. Start with how you actually live, and the beautiful bits follow naturally.

Designing the Perfect Kitchen for Autumn Entertaining

From our experience, the best kitchens for autumn entertaining are designed around people first, because when evenings move indoors, the kitchen often becomes the place where everyone gathers.

🍂 A generous island gives you space to prep, serve and stay part of the conversation
🪑 Comfortable seating turns the kitchen into a natural place to linger
💡 Layered lighting helps move the room from practical cooking space to relaxed evening setting
🧺 Well-planned storage keeps surfaces clear when you are hosting
🏡 A considered layout improves movement between cooking, dining and social areas

The goal is simple, a kitchen that feels easy to use on a busy weekday and equally comfortable when friends or family come over.

Havenfields: It’s All in the Details

Thoughtful finishes that bring the whole home together.

Let’s talk details. At Havenfields, it is the smaller design decisions that give the home its character and make each space feel considered.

✨ Polished chrome details add a crisp, refined finish
🪵 The curved timber handrail brings warmth and softness to the staircase
💡 Decorative wall lights and statement pendants create layers of light and atmosphere
🖤 Dark metal accents add contrast without overwhelming the interiors
🚪 Bespoke handles and ironmongery bring consistency from room to room
🪞 Carefully chosen finishes help traditional and contemporary elements sit comfortably together

These are the details you touch, see and live with every day. Getting them right is what turns a well-designed house into a home that feels complete.

Which detail catches your eye most? Save this post for inspiration, share it with someone planning a renovation, or leave us a comment.

What we like most about Pico House is how the apartment feels generous, calm and connected despite the open-plan layout.

The design uses the apartment’s wide views, natural light and proportions to create clear zones for relaxing, dining and entertaining without closing the space off. The herringbone timber flooring adds warmth and continuity, while the soft neutral palette, marble-clad columns and carefully positioned furniture give each area its own purpose.

For apartment living, good architecture is often about making every square metre work harder while keeping the overall space feeling effortless.

The RIBA National Awards 2026 winners are in 32 projects celebrating the very best of UK architecture, from a striking footbridge across the River Severn to a house built from rammed earth sourced on its own site.

What we love most? The variety. These awards prove that great design isn't about size or budget it's about creativity, care, and putting people at the heart of every decision. With reuse and retrofit featuring strongly alongside new builds, it's an inspiring glimpse of where our industry is heading.

The Stirling Prize shortlist will be drawn from these winners we'll be watching closely.
