''A' rated? 'U' value?! BFRC??! What does it all mean???

Here's some window jargon busted! 💥

A "BFRC 'A' rated" window means the entire window unit—including the glass, frame, and seals—has achieved an 'A' on the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) energy efficiency scale ✅

Ranging from 'A++' to 'E', an 'A' rating indicates the window provides excellent thermal insulation while capturing enough of the sun's natural heat to offset most of what is lost.

Unlike a simple 'U' value (which only measures heat conductivity), a BFRC 'A' rating is calculated using a strict balance of three critical factors:

✅ Heat Loss
✅ Solar Gain
✅ Air Leakage

Windows with an 'A' rating or higher effectively produce zero energy loss! This makes them an excellent standard for improving home energy efficiency and lowering heating bills.

The owners of this beautiful home in South West London chose to incorporate plantation-style shutters in cassic white with their installation of like-for-like bespoke windows. We've just completed the installation of ten 'A' rated, double glazed, Accoya, traditional timber box sash windows, for this stunning central London property!

Everything matches all the period features of the originals - but - these new, high specification, double glazed windows include acoustic insulating laminated glass! No more sleepless nights due to traffic or city centre noise from outside!

To make sure everything was like-for-like, the original internal shutters were removed and then re-instated too.

SPS Timber windows have been manufacturing high quality bespoke timber windows in doors in London since 1998. Our own, in house teams carry out the installations from start to full finish. We are FENSA registered, Which? Trusted Trader and Trustmark approved.

Is it us or was it still sweater weather, just the other week??
Now, we're all struggling to keep our homes cool, while it's reaching 37 degrees outside!

We just received these photos from one of our installers, who just finished installing traditional box sash windows at this popular period mansion block in Putney.

These new windows are like-for-like replacements of the originals but, as they're double glazed, bring much better draft insulation when it's cold, and are much better able to keep the cold IN and the heat OUT during the summer months!
