A New Chapter for Chelsea’s Streets in London: Clean Energy Beneath Our Feet. Planning permission has been granted for the Sydney Street Heat Network — an exciting opportunity to bring zero‑carbon energy to the heart of Chelsea while protecting its historic character.

This pioneering initiative will install a discreet underground ambient loop system beneath local streets, enabling homes and buildings to connect to it, thus obtaining sustainable heating and cooling. Importantly, once complete, there will be no visible change to the streetscape, no noise created, no hot air pushed into the environment, while at the same time preserving the identity of this valued conservation area.

The scheme represents a unique step forward — showing how historic neighbourhoods can lead the way in cutting emissions, improving air quality and delivering resilient, future‑ready energy infrastructure.

Next steps will focus on detailed design, surveys and careful coordination of works to minimise disruption, alongside continued engagement with residents and local stakeholders.

Edward Williams is a founding Director and Secretary of the British Architectural Library Trust, a New York based charity that supports the RIBA Collections. The British Architectural Library Trust (BALT) is an independent American non-profit organization founded in 2013 in support of the Library and Collections of the Royal Institute of British Architects, the foremost architectural library in the world. Next week, Edward will be visiting Stockholm with friends of the BALT and the RIBA to enjoy an exclusive tour of architectural treasures.

The RIBA Collections bring together over four million objects, in a broad range of media with a shared narrative that describe how buildings, communities and civilizations are designed and constructed. From 15th-century books and drawings, to photographs documenting architecture around the world today, the collections offer global scope and rich historical detail.

Laura Carrara-Cagni has just returned from the ULI Europe conference in Berlin and has shared her insights from her term as Co-chair of the Life Sciences and Healthcare product Council.

Laura explained that three years at the helm of the ULI Europe Life Sciences & Healthcare Product Council had came to an end at the conference, marked by a fantastic day of inspiring speakers, engaging member discussions, insightful site visits, and a wonderful dinner at the Berlin Literary Club.

Laura recalled that back in Madrid in 2023, she was asked with Tim Fry to step in as temporary co-chairs. The rest, as they say, is history.

Together, they helped rebuild the Product Council from the ground up. Looking back, she cannot think of a better word than 'proud' to describe what they have achieved over the last three years. They brought together an exceptional group of people—highly accomplished professionals who were consistently generous with their knowledge, insights, and experience.

Laura expressed a heartfelt thank you to the committee members: and acknowledged that their hard work made it possible to deliver outstanding content, speakers and site visits year after year. None of this would have been possible without the committee members.

Laura thanked Tim Fry in particular, for being such a great co-chair and partner over these three years. Whether in Madrid, Milan, London, Paris or Berlin, he always seemed to find time to search for that essential afternoon cup of tea.

Laura and Tim now pass the helm into the very capable hands of Evangelia Chrysikou and George Beaton. Tim and Laura will remain involved through the committee to support a smooth transition.

Discover the project turning heads in Wandsworth — a low-carbon Edwardian home in South London, with a bold new Corten steel and glass gallery extension. Every detail tells a story from the wildflower roof to the air source heat pump and from the bespoke white oak joinery to the curved glazing.

Laura and Edward’s friends and clients wanted something deceptively simple: more light, a stronger connection to the garden, and a home that no longer weighed on their conscience.

What followed was a complete rethinking of a London home, from the bones of its structure to the wildflowers on its roof. The result is a home that feels simultaneously rooted in its Edwardian past and entirely of the moment: warm, light-filled, low-carbon and designed for modern life.
