Our recent work has reinforced the importance of considering energy alongside architecture from the earliest stages of a project. In this newsletter, we look at projects and research spanning residential design, community energy, museum collections and larger estates.

We also share Director Edward Williams’ recent website Insights on the Warm Homes Plan exploring how buildings, energy systems and infrastructure need to be considered together, particularly in dense urban areas.

We want to answer practical questions:

• How can existing buildings be adapted, preferably at scale?
• Why do shared energy systems make sense?
• How can new infrastructure be integrated into sensitive places?
• And how can early decisions support long-term performance?

These are questions that increasingly sit at the centre of architectural and energy design.

Texture, materials, colour and details ... the careful composition of our 19thC London townhouse extension was featured in Living Etc magazine by Deputy Editor Ellen Finch. The feature focused on architectural interest and getting away from a 'white box' extension.

Cagni Williams Energy led on the renewable energy coordinating with the consultant team and contractor to deliver a low energy home.

Laura Carrara-Cagni will be speaking at the First International Seminar – Architectural Identity: Mapping the Questions, to be held in Urbino on Thursday 10th September 2026, as part of the ILA&UD 1976–2026 anniversary initiative. Laura will present Cagni Williams' approach to hospital design which puts healthcare facilities at the heart of the community.

Staircases create opportunities for architectural expression. They connect levels, shape circulation and introduce spatial interest through proportion, movement, lighting and materials.

A successful staircase brings together spatial design, material quality and high quality construction detailing. The quality of these decisions contributes to the character, performance and longevity of the building.

Thoughtful design considers how a home performs every day: how spaces support family interaction, how natural light changes throughout the seasons, how views are framed and how rooms adapt as lifestyles evolve.

These qualities are rarely created through complexity. They come from clarity of purpose and a deep understanding of how people want to live.

In an industry that often celebrates what can be added, perhaps we should spend more time considering what can be improved.

Good architecture doesn't start with space. It starts with life, and shapes the space around it.

As architects, we have a responsibility to stay up to date with evolving regulations, guidance and best practice, particularly in areas that have a direct impact on building safety. Recently, Luke Morgan of ROCKWOOL Group, delivered an insightful CPD presentation focusing on flat roof construction and fire protection.

The session covered:
- Building Regulations requirements and the role of guidance documents such as Approved Document B
- Practical considerations and real-world installations for flat roofs
- The role of non-combustible materials, including insulation, in delivering safer flat roof systems

The presentation generated plenty of discussion, with Luke answering a wide range of technical questions and sharing valuable industry insight. We asked about different finishes and qualities of the product range and the did not limit ourselves to flat roofs.

In the wake of the Grenfell tragedy, the construction industry continues to strengthen its focus on competence, building safety and lifelong learning. Regular technical CPD helps ensure we are playing our part in delivering safer homes and buildings, reflecting the principles promoted through the RIBA's recommendations.

A big thank you to Rockwool and Luke Morgan for an engaging and thought-provoking session.

Feasibility is not merely a procedural milestone on the route to design. A feasibility study is where the environmental performance, commercial viability and long-term adaptability are analysed and options are costed and evaluated. Missing this crucial stage can lead to poor decisions and cost more in the long run.
