E-bikes are helping millions of people travel more affordably and efficiently 🚴⚡

But as their popularity grows, so does the importance of understanding battery safety.

In our latest documentary, London Fire Brigade firefighters recount attending a residential fire later confirmed to have started from an e-bike battery.

Most people assume the products they buy online are safe. But with e-bikes, their batteries and chargers, knowing what you’re buying, using compatible chargers and avoiding overcharging can all help reduce risks. Watch the full documentary now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ag9wkef0Zk

It's been one year since the UK's disposable v**e ban, but the problem hasn't gone away. More than 2 million v**es were incorrectly discarded across just four Biffa sites between June 2025 and March 2026.

⚠️ Over 6,500 v**es still end up in processing sites every day. Seriously damaging to the environment. But also, increasing the risk for workers at waste centres. Employees are exposed to such risk due to the lithium-ion batteries inside these v**es that can cause extremely ferocious fires if crushed or damaged. 🔥

Our survey of 1,000 UK v**ers also revealed that 59% admit they've thrown throw a v**e into household waste or recycling bins in the past year: https://ow.ly/q9wi50Z67in

Of those who admitted to disposing of their v**e in household waste or recycling bins, two thirds said they have been doing this once a week or more. On top of that, 71% of those who had put v**es in household recycling bins admitted doing the same, suggesting the true number of v**es entering the waste system could be in the millions each week.

Safe disposal isn't complicated. But before you bin your v**e, stop and think. Share this message:

🔋 Don't bin the battery in the general waste.

♻️ Recycle your v**es safely through dedicated collection points, such as a retailer drop-off that are taking used v**es or your local recycling point.

Today, our team is in Bristol, proudly supporting Lifeskills with an immersive experience helping young people understand the dangers of electrical hazards, particularly everyday devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, which can become dangerous if used incorrectly.⚡🏠

The 'House of Hazards' features powerful real-life scenarios, including a mocked up e-scooter battery igniting and the aftermath of a bedroom blaze caused by a phone left charging on a bed.

With lithium-ion battery fires linked to e-bikes and e-scooters continuing to rise across the UK, education and awareness have never been more important. Well done to Lifeskills for raising awareness and educating the next generation 👏

“I could see just as the smoke cleared, that there was another person still stuck at the top of the townhouse”

Fire and rescue services witness firsthand the devastating impact e-bike battery fires can have on homes and families.

We’re proud to have support from organisations working in fire safety, protection and prevention, including fire and rescue services across the country, as part of the Battery Breakdown campaign.

Their frontline experience responding to these fires, alongside the growing national incident data and evidence they help collect, reinforces the need for stronger product safety measures, including independent third-party certification of e-bikes batteries.

"Are you concerned about the safety of e-bikes?"🚴⚡We asked the public… Most of us expect the products we buy online to be safe.

But with e-bikes and batteries, it’s not always that straightforward.

Knowing what you’re buying, whether it meets proper safety standards, and if your battery and charger are compatible can make a difference.

New legislation could change how unsafe e-bike batteries enter the UK. Third-party certification that could prevent unsafe models entering the UK market at the border.
