🚨 BUILDERS’ DEPOSITS BANNED? Not quite—but the way customers pay for building work could be about to change.

The Government has announced a new crackdown on cowboy builders, including an Approved Code for trusted traders and an optional payment system where customers’ money can be held safely and released as agreed stages of work are completed.

Personally, I support anything that helps remove cowboy builders from our industry. But any new system must protect both sides.

Homeowners need confidence that their money is safe.

Honest builders need certainty that funds are available to pay their team and order materials—including windows, kitchens and other made-to-order items where suppliers require deposits upfront.

My advice to every homeowner—even my own customers—is always the same: do your due diligence.

Don’t choose a building company simply because they worked for your neighbour. Check how long they have been trading, their insurance, accreditations, reviews and previous projects. Speak directly to former clients and make sure the scope of work and payment schedule are clearly written down.

Most people spend weeks researching before buying an expensive car. A major renovation can cost considerably more and affects the home where your family lives—so research your builder properly.

Trust starts with the details.

At this five-bedroom home in West Byfleet, the focus was on creating an open, extended space that feels light, bright and unique.

Natural light was a key part of the design, with huge windows helping the space feel open throughout the day. The textures and surfaces were chosen carefully too, with natural wood and natural stone working together to reflect the light and give the room its character.

Throughout the project, keeping the site tidy, making clear design decisions, and offering practical advice around financial solutions were all part of the process. The result is a space that feels considered, calm and true to the way it was imagined.

A recommendation carried this project forward.

We had already completed the ground floor extensions on this East Sheen property before the house was sold. After the new owners moved in, the previous homeowner recommended us to return and carry out the next stage of work.

This time, we managed the loft conversion and full house refurbishment, taking the project from initial design through planning and into the complete build.

The aim was to create much more usable space for the family, while keeping the original character of the home intact.

Back where it all started.

We are back at Old Vicarage, a large detached house where we first worked with these clients over 10 years ago.

After completing their loft conversion and extension in Wimbledon around 2015, they moved out of London and came back to us when they were ready for another major project.

This time, the house has been stripped back, rebuilt and the whole roof raised. The roof is now complete, and the team is moving through the internal structure, plasterboards and the first stage of the fit out.

Repeat clients mean a lot to us. They already know how we work, how we communicate, and that we will be there when we say we will.

Keeping a live-in build workable.

On this build, transparency was important from the start. When changes were needed, we kept the process open, and when unexpected issues came up during the work, we focused on finding practical solutions while being clear about the costs involved.

Because the homeowners stayed in the house during the build, we sectioned off the back of the property and helped set up a temporary living arrangement in the lounge, including the kitchen, washing machine, fridge and freezer. It made the project feel a bit like camping at times, but it allowed the work to continue while keeping the home usable.

The standout part was the rear area, with open doors creating a smooth flow between inside and outside, helping the space sit beautifully with the rest of the house.

This extension was about more than space.

The existing conservatory was too hot in summer, too cold in winter and rarely used. At the same time, the ground floor felt long and narrow, so simply adding more space was never going to solve the issue properly.

We redesigned the whole ground floor, including the entrance hallway, kitchen, dining area and living space, to make the layout feel more practical and better suited to everyday family life.

All our projects include extended aftercare, with structural work covered by our 10 year warranty.

The layout matters just as much as the extension itself.
