LEAP Micro AD

LEAP Micro AD LEAP - Local Energy ADventure Partnership, developing urban micro anaerobic digestion systems - turning food waste into renewable energy and fertiliser.

LEAP is a cross-sector partnership seeking to revolutionise urban food waste management through the development of small-scale anaerobic digestion. We are based in Camley Street Natural Park which is a London Wildlife Trust environmental education centre located in an inspiring 2-acre urban nature reserve. Their system will support educational workshops on air quality, recycling and renewable ener

gy. Food waste will be macerated and mixed before being pumped into a 2m3 digester. Biogas will generate electricity and heat during winter and be used for cooking and water heating in the summer. The fertiliser will support algae and hydroponic growing trials.

Launch at the Park:

On the 4th of October we celebrated the completion of our pilot system with a launch at Camley Street Natural Park. People from many different organisations and sectors came to see the system and were talked through the equipment by the engineers. It seemed to create a buzz being small enough for people to connect with and ambitious enough to show the potential benefits of turning food waste into energy and fertilizer in an urban context.
We had a great afternoon with Brazillian music, wonderful food from FoodCycle, mulled wine and sunshine!

Zero carbon waste collection bike:

Having looked at several options, we’ve finally chosen a cargo bike, which will be used to transport food waste from local canteens, hotels etc. to our digester at Camley Street.
Exciting!

Expanding into a new phase.

Good news – the project enters a new phase with WRAP funding. The next year will see the launch of our pilot system as well as expansion to two other sites nearby. Having a small network will allow us to trial different applications for gas and fertiliser use as well as look at several digester configurations.

Welcome to the LEAP Micro AD page - we are a cross-sector partnership developing micro anaerobic digestion for sustainable urban food waste management.
The project aims to optimise the technology as well as create employment and enterprise opportunities, generate local renewable energy and fertiliser, and reduce waste transport and emissions. If you are interested in finding out more or want to trial the fertiliser get in touch with us!
