We’re delighted to be on site working alongside Mulberry Garden Rooms and Landcraft on what promises to be another fantastic outdoor transformation.

The piling works shown here form the foundations for the new garden room, with 20no. 225mm diameter concrete piles, each installed to 700mm depth, carefully positioned to the engineered setting-out plan.

Today marks the beginning of bringing the vision to life - from foundations and groundworks through to the finished garden room and landscaped surroundings.

Alton Garden Transformation - Project Case Study

Today marks the start of a new landscape installation in Alton, delivered collaboratively by Oakfield Landscaping London / Settle Petal Floral Design & Johnathan Alexander Fort Landscape Design.

This project is a great example of how careful hard landscaping, considered planting and exterior detailing can transform an existing garden into a more structured, elegant and usable outdoor space.

The Brief

The existing garden has a combination of established planting, an existing Tegula block pathway, a garden room and areas that have become overgrown and disconnected.

The design aims to bring everything together through:
Reworking and extending the existing block-paved pathway.

Creating a stronger connection between the garden room and the rest of the garden.

Introducing approximately 60m² of new planting borders.
Installing around 185 two-litre plants.

Incorporating approximately 26 larger 10-litre specimen plants.

Adding approximately 2 tonnes of screened Grade 1 topsoil.

Creating a new ornamental gravel finish using 20mm golden gravel.

Retaining and carefully reusing suitable existing blocks wherever possible.

Removing unwanted vegetation and a small existing garden wall.

Creating a substantially more generous and mature planting scheme.

The Hard Landscaping

A particularly interesting element of the project is the decision to reuse the existing Tegula blocks rather than simply remove everything and start again. Here at Oakfield we always aim to reuse or up cycle wherever possible.

The existing pathway will be carefully lifted and extended, with the recovered blocks being incorporated into the new layout.

The specification calls for areas to be excavated to approximately 130mm below finished level, followed by a compacted 70–90mm MOT Type 1 sub-base and a sharp-sand laying course.

The design also identifies areas where blocks will be reinstated in concrete, including the additional rows required around the garden room.

This approach gives the finished garden a sense of continuity while making the existing materials work much harder within the new design.

The Garden Room

The garden room becomes a key architectural feature within the scheme.

Rather than allowing it to sit as an isolated structure, the revised pathway and gravel areas will frame it and create a much stronger relationship between the building and the surrounding landscape.

The drawing also allows for a possible future extension using existing blocks, giving the garden flexibility as the project develops.

The Planting Transformation

The planting is where the garden will really begin to change character.

The specification includes 60m² of prepared borders, with the existing ground being cultivated, aerated and cleared of larger stones before planting.

The soil will be carefully prepared to create a fine tilth, with the beds then raked and levelled following installation.

The scale of the planting is significant:

185 × 2-litre plants

26 × 10-litre specimen plants

This combination is important because it allows the garden to achieve both immediate visual impact and longer-term maturity.

The smaller plants will knit together over time, while the larger specimens provide instant structure, height and focal points from day one.

Settle Petal Exterior Floristry

Working alongside the landscaping installation, Settle Petal Exterior Floristry will bring an additional layer of horticultural and decorative expertise to the project.

The objective isn't simply to fill the borders with plants.

The planting needs to feel luxurious, abundant and deliberately composed, with consideration given to colour, texture, form, seasonal interest and how the planting interacts with the hard landscaping.

This is where the landscape installation and exterior floristry come together as one cohesive scheme.

Today's first phase

With installation commencing today, the initial focus will be on clearing, preparation and setting out.

The sequence will broadly involve:

Clearing unwanted vegetation and removing the small garden wall.
Carefully lifting and storing reusable Tegula blocks.
Establishing the new pathway and garden-room setting-out lines.
Excavating areas requiring new sub-base construction.
Preparing the new planting borders.
Importing and incorporating the specified screened topsoil.
Beginning the pathway reconstruction and extension.
Preparing the areas for the ornamental golden gravel.
Establishing the planting layout before installation.
Progressively introducing the specimen and 2-litre planting.

The Vision

What makes this project particularly exciting is that we're not simply building a new garden — we're working with an existing landscape and giving it a completely new identity.

Creating a Luxuriously Planted Oasis of Colour

This project is about transforming an under-established garden into a rich, immersive and beautifully layered planting scheme, while retaining the character and functionality of the existing garden.

Working from the landscape design and planting visualisations provided by the award winning www.landcraft.co.uk - our team here at Oakfield Landscaping London with our sister company Settle Petal Floral Design will create a garden that feels natural and abundant, with sweeping planting borders flowing around a generous central lawn. The intention is to move away from a predominantly open lawn and introduce a much stronger sense of colour, texture, seasonal interest and biodiversity.

The Starting Point

The existing garden already provides an excellent framework, with mature trees, established boundary walls and a substantial lawn area. Rather than completely redesigning the space, the approach is to work with these existing features and carefully introduce new elements around them.

The existing trees will be retained as important structural features, providing height, maturity and shade. The central lawn will also remain, giving the garden an open green heart and allowing the planting to be viewed from different perspectives.

The transformation will come through the creation of large, organically shaped planting borders on either side of the lawn.

Creating the New Planting Borders

The existing lawn edges will be carefully redefined to create sweeping, naturalistic curves. These borders will deliberately avoid rigid geometric lines, allowing the planting to appear as though it has naturally evolved through the garden.

Soil will be redistributed and prepared to create the required levels and subtle contours, particularly where the design calls for the borders to gently rise towards the boundaries.

The planting beds will then be carefully prepared with suitable soil and organic matter, creating the foundations for a healthy and long-lasting planting scheme.

A Palette Designed for Colour

The real character of the finished garden will come from its planting.

The scheme combines perennials, ornamental grasses, shrubs, climbers and structural plants, creating several layers of planting rather than relying on one dominant species.

Colour will move through the garden in waves, with combinations of whites, soft pinks, purples, blues, oranges and fresh greens.

Existing mature trees will form the upper canopy, while shrubs such as Myrtus, Pittosporum, Viburnum and Hydrangea will create the middle layer.

Ornamental grasses including Miscanthus will introduce movement, particularly when catching the breeze, while lower-growing perennials will soften the edges and provide continuous seasonal colour.

This layered approach means that even when individual plants are out of flower, the garden will retain structure, texture and visual interest.

Working Around the Existing Trees

The established trees are an important part of the garden's identity and will be carefully incorporated into the new scheme.

Where required, trees will be pruned to improve access, light levels and visibility. The planting beneath them may be adjusted according to the conditions found on site, ensuring that the final planting is appropriate for the available light and root environment.

The objective is not simply to plant around the trees, but to make them feel like an intentional part of the overall composition.

Hard Landscaping & Garden Access

The existing Dutch clay paving will provide a contrasting hard-landscaped element against the softer planting and lawn.

The relationship between the paving, lawn and borders will be carefully considered so that the transition feels seamless.

Existing brick boundary walls will remain a strong architectural feature, with planting used to soften and complement the masonry. Climbers and taller planting will help integrate the boundaries into the garden rather than allowing them to dominate the space.

A Garden Designed to Feel Larger

One of the key principles of the design is the way the planting borders guide the eye through the garden.

Rather than creating straight borders along both sides, the sweeping curves encourage the eye to travel deeper into the space. The lawn becomes a natural pathway through the planting, creating changing views as you move through the garden.

This gives the garden a greater sense of depth and discovery.

From the house, the view will be framed by layers of planting. Further into the garden, new planting combinations and structural trees will gradually reveal themselves, creating a much more immersive experience.

The Final Result

The completed garden will be transformed from a predominantly lawn-led space into a luxuriously planted outdoor sanctuary.

The vision is for a garden that changes throughout the seasons — fresh and vibrant in spring, overflowing with colour through summer, rich and textural into autumn, and retaining strong evergreen structure throughout winter.

Phase 2 - Groundworks, structural landscaping & external carpentry

Project Overview

This Islington project is a great example of how Oakfield Landscaping approaches a challenging London garden: first resolve the structure, levels and security, then build the high-end finishes and lifestyle elements around them.

The finished garden is being designed as a sophisticated urban retreat, combining artisanal polished sandstone paving, slim-format herringbone pavers, a private hot tub area, architectural planting, integrated lighting and an outdoor sound system.

At this stage, the project is still very much in construction - but the groundwork and structural elements are already beginning to establish the framework for the finished space.

1. Establishing the Existing Conditions

The first stage involved assessing the existing garden and working with what was already there.

The garden presented several challenges typical of an established Islington property:

Existing stepped brickwork and retaining structures
Changes in level across the garden
Existing boundary fencing
Restricted working space
Mature vegetation and established ivy
Existing paving requiring careful integration
The need for increased privacy and security

Rather than simply covering these elements, the approach has been to incorporate the existing architecture into the new design.

The aged London brickwork provides an important character element, while the new timber and dark-painted detailing introduces a more contemporary layer.

2. Security & Boundary Works

One of the first major elements undertaken has been the construction and upgrading of the security boundary fence.

The new timber structure has been carefully installed above and alongside the existing masonry, creating a considerably more secure and private enclosure.

The horizontal timber boarding gives the boundary a strong architectural presence, while the darker horizontal trim provides a deliberate contemporary contrast.

This isn't simply a functional security fence - it forms part of the visual architecture of the garden, creating a backdrop against which the future planting, lighting and outdoor living elements can sit.

3. Working Around Existing Brickwork

A particularly interesting part of the project has been retaining and working around the existing brick structures.

The garden contains a series of existing brick retaining walls and stepped sections, which create both challenges and opportunities.

Rather than removing everything and starting again, Oakfield has been working with the existing masonry to:
retain → reinforce → build around → integrate.

The result will be a garden where the original London brickwork remains visible and becomes part of the finished aesthetic.

This is particularly important in a period urban environment, where completely new landscaping can sometimes feel disconnected from the architecture of the property.

4. Structural Timberwork & Detailing

The photographs show the substantial amount of timber being prepared and brought onto site.

The timber is being used to construct the new boundary and associated architectural elements, with individual boards being measured, cut and installed to follow the geometry of the existing garden.

At this stage, the importance of accurate setting-out becomes obvious.

Every line needs to work with:

Existing wall levels
Boundary lines
Changes in elevation
Finished paving levels
Drainage requirements
Future planting
Lighting positions
The proposed hot tub and entertaining areas
The finished garden may look effortless, but achieving that appearance requires considerable preparation beneath the surface.

5. Preparing for the New Paving

With the structural work progressing, attention is now moving towards the hard landscaping.

The scheme combines two contrasting paving styles.
Artisanal Polished Sandstone

The principal paving will introduce a warmer, tactile natural-stone surface. The polished artisanal sandstone is intended to bring a more refined character to the garden, complementing the existing London brick and timber.

Slimsett Herringbone Paving

Alongside the sandstone, slim-format Slimsett pavers laid in a herringbone configuration will introduce a more graphic, contemporary element.

The herringbone pattern is particularly suited to this garden because it creates movement through what is otherwise a relatively compact space.

The contrast between natural stone and precise herringbone paving will help define separate zones without relying heavily on walls or screens.

6. Setting Out the Finished Garden

At this stage, materials are being prepared and the ground is being progressively organised around the final design.

This is where the project begins to transition from a construction site into a garden.

The final layout will create dedicated areas for:
Entertaining → relaxation → hot tub → planting → circulation.

The paving patterns will be used to help define these zones, with the hard landscaping providing the permanent framework for the softer elements that follow
7. Hot Tub & Outdoor Living

One of the major lifestyle features of the finished garden will be a dedicated hot tub area.

The hot tub isn't being treated as an object simply placed into the garden. Its position needs to be considered alongside:

Structural support
Finished paving levels
Access
Privacy
Drainage
Electrical requirements
Lighting

The surrounding landscaping will therefore be designed to make the hot tub feel like an integrated part of the garden rather than an afterthought.

8. Lighting & Atmosphere

A further layer to the project is the inclusion of an integrated outdoor sound system.

As with the lighting, the objective is for technology to form part of the garden experience without dominating the visual design.

The garden is ultimately being conceived as an outdoor room — somewhere to entertain, relax, use the hot tub and spend time with friends and family.

The sound system therefore becomes part of the overall lifestyle design rather than a separate installation.

Where We Are Now

The photographs capture an important point in the project.

What might initially look like a garden full of timber, tools and unfinished surfaces is actually the structural foundation of the final design coming together.
The security boundary has been substantially progressed, timberwork is being prepared and installed, the existing masonry has been incorporated into the scheme, and the paving materials and construction areas are being organised.

The project is now moving towards the next major transformation:

Structural works → Ground preparation → Paving → Hot tub installation → Lighting → Planting → Sound system → Final detailing.
