🥳Happy 40th anniversary Thames & Newcastle!

It was 1984, and mechanical engineers Keith Leask and Peter Wilton were working at The Times in Fleet Street, responsible for keeping the printing presses running.

Following an industrial dispute, they walked out, took on odd jobs, got new work through their squash club and made up a company name based on their old overalls.

Those events paved the way for the birth of Thames & Newcastle two years later. Needless to say, a lot has changed since then, so as we celebrate 40 years in business, we look back at where it all began and the people, projects and values that have shaped our growth.

Here’s a snapshot of some of the finished joinery and period detailing from our recent renovation of a Maida Vale flat.

The hallway showcases wall panelling, skirting and cornicing, alongside new wall lighting and a bespoke ceiling light. Our in-house joinery team made sure all period detailing was restored to match the original character of the Grade II listed property.

We're making great progress in Richmond where we're constructing a £2.6m four-storey family home.

🧱Our bricklayers are bringing the masonry up from ground level to first floor and installing brick slip feature lintels supplied by Phoenix Building Products.

Meanwhile, our in-house fabricators are busy installing the steel frame, which sits above a new 1,500 sq ft basement, also delivered by our own team of specialists.

On track to complete next Spring, the completed home will span 5,500 sq ft and feature traditional brickwork, timber windows and a slate roof to complement local architecture.

Not a bad spot for a sunbathe and a coffee…☀️☕

These new photos show the transformed outdoor space of a Grade II listed Maida Vale garden flat, recently renovated by our team. We repaved the entire area and reconfigured and reclad a concrete staircase in Portland stone, complete with a new handrail.

We also rejuvenated the flat’s exterior, stabilising the building envelope and painstakingly re-rendering it with ashlar-lined lime render.

Our extension and upgrade of a 6,000 sq ft home in Essex is now complete!

We’ve handed over the design-and-build project with all works completed on schedule within 30 weeks.

Our team delivered a vast range of improvements, including new bathrooms, flooring, a bespoke kitchen and a stunning feature staircase. We also upgraded electrical, mechanical and plumbing services, and built a new structure around the existing swimming pool so it can be used all year round.

As the private home of a long-standing client for whom we’ve delivered multiple projects, it was a real honour to transform this property inside and out.

Today, we’re looking back at a project which saw our team deliver nine luxury apartments in Finchley, North London.

Following installation of the reinforced concrete frame, we were appointed for the second phase of the project, taking it from shell to finish. We completed the exterior and then delivered the full internal fit-out, including M&E services, bathrooms, kitchens, fixtures, fittings and decoration.

This residential development demonstrates a commitment to sustainable, responsible construction through the use of durable materials, thoughtful design and a focus on long-term building performance.

The result is a high-quality living environment that balances contemporary design with lasting environmental value.

Great to see our apprentice carpenter Johnny Lucas progressing so well and showing a genuine commitment to his new trade.

Johnny spent several months in the roofing industry before joining our team as a labourer. His strong work ethic was quickly recognised by our site management team who put him forward for a Level 2 carpentry apprenticeship, which he began last year.

Johnny’s already proven to be a valuable team member and we look forward to supporting him as he continues to build his skills and knowledge in our workshop.

Today we’re looking back at this home refurbishment and extension project in Fulham, featuring a vast range of bespoke joinery, delivered by our in-house team.

Working for a private client, we transformed the property’s interior with high-end finishes and added extra space by constructing a rear extension and converting both the roof space and basement.

The joinery created stunning bedroom furniture, storage space and doors as well as period detailing such as wall panelling.

Renovating a period property is both rewarding and challenging. Combining old with new can be a tricky balancing act for all those involved, requiring specialist skills and knowledge.

To smooth the process, it’s important to:

~ Research permissions early: listed buildings and conservation areas come with specific rules
~ Appoint a specialist project team: source both an architect and contractor with experience in heritage renovation and materials
~ Build in extra time to minimise risks: investigative work upfront saves costly surprises later
