African Blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon), or grenadilla, is one of the rarest and most valuable hardwoods in the world. Native to dry savannas of sub-Saharan Africa, especially Tanzania and Mozambique, it grows very slowly and only in specific arid conditions. Its dense, dark wood is prized for musical instruments and fine carvings, driving high demand and overharvesting. Habitat loss and poor regeneration rates due largely to ecological specialisation, has led to significant population decline. Now listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List and regulated under CITES, African Blackwood’s rarity highlights the urgent need for sustainable management and conservation.
And yet I’ve managed to secure enough of it to make not one but TWO axes with it, so stay tuned 😉
Y’all had better appreciate these wood lessons (giggity) coz they take forever to write 😅
