At Origami House, a Victorian terrace in Haringey, the outrigger corner is where the kitchen, dining space and garden all meet. The simplest structural answer would have put a steel column right there, splitting the view.

RISE Design Studio worked with Triple M engineers on a different approach. A steel frame beneath the retained outrigger carries its load to columns set back from the corner. That leaves a column-free corner, with glazing that turns towards the garden without a post in the way.

RISE Design Studio has shared an early, speculative concept for a community pavilion behind the Grade II listed chapels at Paddington Old Cemetery in Kilburn.

The work is pro bono, with local resident Tessa Morrison, who has spent more than two years talking to local people about what the empty 1855 chapels could become.

The studio studied the original drawings at the V&A, modelled the chapels in 3D and took the four gables of the chapel frontage as the starting point for a four-peaked pavilion. It would house a community food hub and gathering space.

Design Director Imran Jahn presented the concept at last week's One Kilburn open meeting. The design has no approval or funding yet, and residents' views will shape what happens next.

Flower House is nearly complete.

The scaffolding is down at RISE Design Studio's Victorian terrace extension in Queen's Park, and the pendant lights have been switched on for the first time.

The design starts with the street. The arches of the front doors and bay windows are carried round to the garden, reinterpreted at a larger scale in white lime render. Tall black-framed doors open the kitchen onto the terrace. Beside them, a curved window rises into roof glazing, bringing the garden and sky into a single view.

Above the lightwell, a white canopy sweeps down from the party wall with a circular opening left for a tree to grow through. It's a small courtyard that places planting at the heart of the home.

Lowering the ground floor gave the new spaces extra height. The 170 m² home follows RISE's fabric-first, Passivhaus-informed approach, with high-performance glazing, careful airtightness and an air source heat pump.

Every house already has a ventilation engine inside it. Warm air rises, and in a London terrace the stair is the chimney. RISE Design Studio uses that on most of its projects: a low-level opening in the rear extension draws cool air in, the stair carries the warm air up, and an opening rooflight at the top lets it out. On a summer evening the house purges the heat it stored during the day, for nothing.

The new journal piece covers how the stack effect works, the limits (it only cools when outside is cooler than inside), how it fits alongside airtightness and MVHR in a low-energy home, and what the Building Regulations ask of it.

From the archive: a yoga and wellness retreat RISE Design Studio designed for a working farm above Lake Krøderen in Buskerud, Norway.

The building splits into two simple timber cabins that sit at the scale of the farm's barns from the courtyard, with the gap between them framing the lake. On the lake side the slope drops away to reveal a concrete base holding the spa and plunge pool. Upstairs, a yoga room with a single large window across the water and a small office mezzanine under the roof.

Designed fabric-first for long Norwegian winters. The scheme went to planning stage and no further, but it remains one of the studio's favourites.

A Gaudí house in the middle of nowhere. This summer Sean Ronnie Hill of RISE Design Studio visited the Xalet del Catllaràs, a catenary-section house at 1,371 m above La Pobla de Lillet, built in 1902-05 by Eusebi Güell for the engineers opening his coal mines. Gaudí's authorship was only confirmed officially in February 2026, a hundred years after his death.

The piece covers the cableway that carried coal down the mountain, the single vault that does structure, envelope and plan in one, the five design fingerprints that link it to Gaudí's other buildings, and the twenty-year restoration that put the masonry stair back. Plus a brief look at Rafael Guastavino's vaulted cement factory at the Clot del Moro, and the quarry behind it.

Sustainable clothes in Barcelona, in a shop built to last.

INDOI Ghar opened in May 2025 on Carrer de Maria Aguiló in Poblenou, Barcelona. It's the home of INDOI, the slow fashion label founded by Mallika Chaudhuri, and RISE Design Studio designed and helped build it.

INDOI makes clothing from natural fibres only, in runs of no more than five per garment, with a made-to-order collection cut and sewn in the workshop behind the shop. Menswear arrives this autumn.

The fit-out kept everything worth keeping: the original terrazzo floor, the timber doors, the old walls under natural limewash, with reclaimed pine shelving and second-hand lighting. Almost nothing new was manufactured for the shop.

RISE Senior Architect José Dengra spent a day at the weekend at Can Lis, the house Jørn Utzon built for his family on a clifftop near Portopetro, Mallorca. It is four stone pavilions linked by open courtyards, with frameless windows cut deep into thick marés walls and furniture built from the same stone as the structure.

The studio has written up what the house teaches about light, material and maintenance, and how those lessons apply to Victorian terraces in London just as well as to a Mediterranean cliff. Photos courtesy of the Can Lis Foundation.

RISE Design Studio's latest journal piece makes the case for treating solar shading as part of a home's design from the outset, rather than an add-on at the end.

More than half of UK homes are already at risk of overheating, and under 2°C of warming the Climate Change Committee expects that to reach around 90% of existing homes. Air conditioning only adds to the energy and emissions problem. External shading is the passive alternative, and the piece sets out the main types, which approaches suit which orientation, and why external shading always outperforms internal blinds. It also points to the new Shading for Housing guide from the Good Homes Alliance.

Running through it is Ribbon House in Queen's Park, where deep reveals and angled overhangs are the shading.

Architecture is not the product. Trust is

In 2011, RISE Design Studio founder Sean Hill believed that if the work was good enough, everything else would follow. The first five years taught him otherwise. Clients rarely arrive looking for drawings. They arrive looking for confidence: that someone understands how they want to live, and will guide them through one of the largest commitments of their lives.

The architecture comes later. The trust comes first.
