Atelier One has been fortunate to enjoy many interesting collaborations with talented Architects, Artists and Designers. Our completed work includes a large number of large international projects including the shell structures of the Singapore Arts Centre, the development of Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia, and in the UK the Baltic Gallery in Gateshead and three buildings for White Cube

in London. In addition to both public and private buildings, Atelier One is also involved in a variety of art installation projects, touring exhibitions and stages. Some of the most notable completed projects are Anish Kapoor’s ‘Cloudgate’ in Chicago and Stage Sets for U2 and the Rolling Stones. Atelier One recently completed a large project in Slovenia; the National Stadium and another one in Singapore called the Gardens by the Bay, which was recently awarded the 'World Building of the Year 2012‛ at the World Architecture Festival . In all of these projects Atelier One continues to pursue efficient, aesthetic and ambitious engineering solutions. Sustainability Statement

Since the conception of Atelier One 20 years ago, one of the core aims of the practice has been to endeavour to achieve sustainability in construction. In an industry where this is very difficult to justify our approach is twofold:
We strive to find the most efficient structural solutions requiring the least resources. In parallel, we are continually researching materials, systems and construction methods that reduce energy consumption and regulate harmful emissions. As part of a wider design team we embrace all new technologies carefully integrating them where appropriate to achieve more environmentally responsible proposals.

Flashback to Expo 2020 in Dubai. We worked with and to develop the exhibition structural design for Alif, – The Mobility Pavilion. Alif is an immersive, large-scale exhibition that tells the story of human mobility. Featuring the world’s largest passenger lift, 9m high hyper real giants and a snapshot of futuristic technology, Atelier One provided engineering support from concept design through to completion.

This ground-breaking exhibition was designed to be fully removable to allow for the pavilion to be converted to office use after the Expo, but the exhibition was so popular that it remains open as part of Expo City.

In another exciting step forwards the widespread adoption of bamboo as a mainstream structural material, the has launched their Manual for the Design of Bamboo Structures.

“Bamboo has many necessary properties for a structural bio-based material. It grows rapidly, it is strong, it has an efficient structural shape and a good strength-to-weight ratio. If treated and designed correctly, it may also be highly durable. To date, the full structural potential of bamboo has not been realised for several reasons, which includes a lack of design guidance. This Manual aims to address the knowledge gaps, giving practical advice and guidance on
how structural engineers can adopt bamboo within mainstream construction.”

The Gardens by the Bay Supertrees were recently featured in the Create article: Engineering that looks like science fiction.

Exploring science-fiction infrastructure, the piece notes that “every so often, engineers unveil a structure or device that looks more like it belongs in the Star Wars or Dune universes than the real world” – and goes on to discuss the now-infamous Supertrees, part of the Gardens by the Bay complex, which Atelier One structurally engineered.

“It consists of 18 ‘supertrees’ that combine concrete and steel with natural greenery to produce a distinctive visual identity when the structures are lit at night. One of the supertrees acts as an air exhaust for conservatories nestled inside two of the structures, while almost a dozen boast solar photovoltaic cells in their canopies. The structure is said to have inspired the planet Xandar in the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Gardens by the Bay has since become an instantly recognisable landmark, appearing across film, television, gaming and anime.

Films:
-Crazy Rich Asians (2018): The Supertree Grove features prominently.
-Hitman: Agent 47 (2015): The gardens are used as a key location.
-Guardians of the Galaxy (2014): The planet Xandar was inspired by the Supertrees.

Television:
-Planet Earth II: The Supertree Grove appears in the “A World of Wonder” episode.

Video games:
-Call of Duty: Black Ops III: An entire mission is set in the gardens.
-Asphalt Legends Unite: The Singapore track incorporates Gardens by the Bay.

Anime:
-Plastic Memories: Locations inspired by the Supertrees are featured.

We are thrilled to announce that our project Tekαkαpimək Contact Station won the 2025 The Institution of Structural Engineers Award for regenerative design using indigenous knowledge, materials, and construction techniques for maximum social impact.

This off-grid timber visitor centre in Maine’s Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument draws from indigenous knowledge and uses local materials throughout. Built with community collaboration, the structure blends furniture, architecture, and climate response into a cohesive, regenerative public space — setting a new bar for sustainable civic design. All Wabanaki Cultural Knowledge and Intellectual Property shared within this project is owned by the Wabanaki Nations.

Judges’ comments: “A bold and principled project that places indigenous knowledge, local materials, and community leadership at the heart of structural design. The team stayed true to a clear regenerative vision, resulting in a structure shaped by social purpose and environmental care. It’s a compelling example of how engineering can respond to local context with humility, integrity, and lasting impact.”

Atelier One has two projects featured in ‘s latest edition of Biomimicry in Architecture, a seminal catalogue of projects that take inspiration from the natural world.

Our Kampala Bus Station concept looks at how engineered bamboo can follow stress lines through complex forms for maximum efficiency, echoing nature’s idea of strength where material is needed.

The Luxmore Bridge at .college , designed with Jamie McCullough, explores reciprocal structures , where short elements work together to span much greater distances, inspired by the logic of woven nests.

The book culminates with a 3 page checklist of practical steps to incorporate biomimicry into your projects. It is worth purchasing for this alone.

Nature reminds us that elegance and efficiency aren’t opposites. They work best together.

We’re delighted that Bale Bio has been shortlisted for the Prize 2025. The project shows the potential for the use of engineered bamboo.

Bale Bio is a community gallery and pavilion developed under the Bauhaus Earth Rebuilt Initiative. Designed as a prototype for regenerative urban construction, it merges traditional Balinese “Bale Banjar” forms with innovative material systems. It pioneers the use of structural laminated bamboo—sourced from Flores and fabricated in Bali—alongside reclaimed timber, volcanic stone offcuts, and salvaged tiles. Prefabricated modular elements enable disassembly, repair, and reuse, while life cycle analysis confirms a net carbon benefit.

The 84 m² project addresses the urgent need for low-carbon, locally based construction in tropical cities, offering a space for cultural exchange while strengthening community ties and regional supply chains. Bale Bio also shows bamboo’s viability as a structural material, generating local jobs and creating a model for regenerative, climate-positive architecture worldwide.

Bamboo is gaining increasing recognition—not just for its sustainability, but for its structural potential. We’re proud to have played a part in bringing Kaway’an EcoPark to life, a landmark development in the Philippines that demonstrates what bamboo can do in contemporary architecture.

Working alongside visionary teams from IBUKU Studio, Sangay Architects and PT Bamboo Pure, we were challenged to help translate an ambitious design into a resilient structure that could stand up to the realities of the Philippine climate. Key to the structural concept of the pavilion is the dialogue between materials, each celebrated for their natural strengths. The hybrid composition of steel and bamboo was a purposeful choice aimed to exploit the best of both materials and deliver lightness, contrast and material honesty.

8 Bleeding Heart Yard receives one of only 20 RIBA National Awards!

The judges said: “The project represents the importance of the collaboration between the structural engineer and the architect, Groupwork, at a very strategic design level: their investigations and combined creativity in demonstrating that the structure and façades could take additional loads were fundamental.”

“The project team single-mindedly pursued the idea of intensifying use, reusing both structure and skin, and keeping embodied carbon and running costs to a minimum. The result offers a blueprint for how office buildings can be redeveloped, and translates well, adding to the richness of the varied architecture along this street.”

What makes it special to us?

·Thoughtful Conversion:
An existing office space was transformed with a rear extension and a two-story CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) rooftop extension.

·Exposed Beauty:
The architectural design boldly exposed the original building’s structure, requiring precise re-engineering for fire safety. Extensive intrusive and non-destructive testing allowed only minimal concrete repairs where absolutely needed.

· Sustainable:
The team reused almost all of the existing building and avoided adding new finishes. Timber was justified for the rooftop extension thanks to improved experience, sustainability, low weight and speed of installation.

· Historic Nod:
A unique mesh façade wraps the building, echoing the site’s previous building.

This project is a testament to what can be achieved with close collaboration between the design and contractor team.
