RCD Tripping – when the real problem is hidden in the wiring
A recent fault-finding visit was a good example of why repeated RCD tripping should never be treated as simply an “RCD problem”.
The customer reported that the RCD was repeatedly tripping, with the cooker circuit initially suspected as the likely cause.
After carrying out a full investigation, several separate electrical issues were identified.
🔎 What we found:
• The cooker circuit neutral was incorrectly connected to the neutral associated with a different circuit protected by a separate RCD. This created an unwanted neutral connection between circuits and was contributing to the RCD tripping.
• The CPC (Circuit Protective Conductor) to one circuit had been extended using a very poor DIY-style connection. The conductor was also coming into contact with the neutral bar, creating another potential fault condition.
• A kitchen light fitting showed low insulation resistance between neutral and CPC. The fitting was therefore replaced.
• The consumer unit itself had also been installed with far more capacity than was actually required for the installation, with a 15-way board being used for only five circuits. While spare capacity is not inherently a problem, the installation should always be designed appropriately for the actual requirements.
✅ All identified faults were rectified.
The defective light fitting was replaced, the incorrect neutral connection was corrected, the CPC issue was rectified and the installation was fully tested again.
The electrical installation is now operating correctly without the reported RCD tripping.
This is a good reminder that RCD tripping is a symptom, not necessarily the fault itself.
Correct diagnosis requires proper inspection, testing and fault-finding rather than simply replacing the RCD and hoping for the best.
