When space is at a premium, good garden design isn’t necessarily about trying to make a garden feel bigger — it’s about making every part of it work harder.

In this small West London garden, rather than simply creating planting around the perimeter, we brought the beds right into the paved area. This helped break up the space naturally, creating distinct places for relaxing and dining, as well as room for the BBQ.

The planting also makes the journey through the garden much more interesting. You move around and between the beds, with different views opening up as you go.

Painting the fencing black was another simple but important part of the design. The dark boundaries visually recede and provide a fantastic backdrop for the foliage, allowing the greens, tree ferns and more colourful planting to really stand out.

It’s still a small garden. But now there’s a surprising amount happening within it.

A 12m x 5m garden in London, and a brief with a lot packed into it: dining, lounging, a garden studio doubling as a family cinema room, a BBQ — all without the space ever feeling cramped.

The starting point was a bit of a problem. A considerable drop from the kitchen diner's French doors to the lower garden meant the house and the garden barely spoke to each other.

The solution: wide limestone steps flanked by planted beds, pulling the greenery right up to the house. Suddenly the kitchen diner feels like it opens straight into planting rather than looking down at a garden below.

Those beds do double duty — trees planted within them now screen the kitchen diner from the rear neighbours, so you can sit at the kitchen table and actually feel private. And on party nights, the steps double as extra seating of their own.

From there, the garden splits into three zones of roughly equal width. The steps and top terrace ease you down from the house. A seating and dining area sits at the centre, with the paving material shifting here to mark a change in atmosphere. And at the far end, the garden room — used as the family's cinema and den — anchors the whole space.

Keeping the proportions even between all three is what stops a small plot from feeling unbalanced; each zone reads as generous rather than squeezed.

Low maintenance was non-negotiable, so irrigation keeps the plants and trees happy when needed — but the planting is still architectural, layered, and built for year-round interest, not just a green backdrop.

Proof that a small garden doesn't have to choose between function and a wonderful sense of abundance. It just needs a plan. 💚

Same terrace, two very different moods.

In the foreground beds, the planting is deliberately loose at this time of year — Stipa tenuissima moving in the wind, santolina spilling untidily over the brick edges, verbena rigida threading purple through the grasses. It's soft, informal, a little wild by design.

Then your eye lifts to the rear raised bed, and the mood shifts entirely. Tree ferns, three single-stemmed Sorbus underplanted with foliage — layered, lush, almost jungle-like against the black fencing.

And by night, the wood burner takes over — that same border glowing amber, the whole terrace turning intimate and warm.

This is where it started: the builders' storage yard for a house renovation in South West London.

We divided the space into two terraces: an upper level for relaxing, a lower one for dining, linked by a large island bed that doubles as focal point and route-finder, offering more than one way down to the lower terrace.

Right plant, right place shaped every decision — taking into account the aspect bed by bed, working with shade where it fell and sun where it landed, rather than fighting either.
