As evenings draw in, many of our clients turn indoors. Winter is a good time to plan and lay a hallway floor, safe from the unpredictable weather.

This hall in N22 features the Elcott 100 pattern, a simple Edwardian design based on a 100 mm square with a three-line border. The same pattern continues on the path outside and on the porch steps (swipe to slide 3).

Each step features our round-edge step tread tiles (slide 4). This style of tile is designed to protect steps and offer a cost-effective alternative to natural stone, marble, or granite.

Design: Elcott 100
Design code: LM-498
Tile Colours: Grey, Super White, Black

An impressive front path to enhance a beautifully restored Victorian home in the heart of the Fulham Conservation Area.

EMR Architecture reimagined the entire property: “We secured planning for a basement, loft conversion, and rear extension, and stripped the house back to brick so every room could be rebuilt with intention, purpose, and flow.”

At the front, the restored entrance with its stained-glass door needed a period-style tiled path with the same character. We provided our Willesden 50 pattern in a bespoke colourway of Black, Super White and Dark Green, framed with a traditional Granada border of squares and triangles. As with many of our designs, we planned it to scale as part of our design and consultation service.

Thank you to for including us in a project that truly blends heritage style with contemporary living.

From our archive:
‘Bits of the world blow towards him, and come apart on the wind’ is the title of a site-specific work by Dutch artist created for The Marque, on Hills Road in central Cambridge.
It features three geometric floor pieces set into a public space, for which we supplied the tiles.

Each floor piece echoes the shapes and colours of the wall work above. Brass inlays, matted down and lightly antiqued, cut through the tiles to create an unusual visual effect.

Our tiles are usually found in Victorian hallways, so it was a pleasure to see the same geometric shapes used in a completely new way.

Thank you to Simon Harlow and the team at Silo Design and Build for fabricating and installing the pieces.

A front path in Shepherd’s Bush, featuring a unique and special pattern we named Brigitte.

It was conceived by experimenting with the tile shapes and colours from our core range of heritage reproduction tiles.

We love how the tessellating repeats are subtler and more shifting, giving a less formal, more contemporary feel. And especially how the black ball-topped railings contrast with the floor's angular geometry.

We worked closely with the client to ensure the layout fit her path exactly as she wanted. We then pre-assembled the design onto sheets in our workshop, ready for installation. It is always a pleasure to see an idea become reality.

Brigitte started as an idea in our studio. If you have one of your own, or can’t find the pattern you’re after, we can customise a design or create something unique with you.

A remarkable hallway transformation. Swipe to slide 7 to see what this floor looked like before work began.

Warren James was instrumental in bringing this home back to life with heritage-sensitive decorating. Add one of our period-style geometric tiled floors, and you get a cool, fresh hallway that still feels true to the house’s era.

Australian Green is the colour that makes the pattern work especially well. It brings a contemporary feel and sits in perfect harmony with the walls.

Slides 5 and 6 show some of the behind-the-scenes drawings we do to bring a design like this to life.

Well done to for a beautiful installation, and to for the incredible decorating work. Both work across Kent: Warren James from Tonbridge, covering Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks and the surrounding areas, and Old English Tiling Company across Kent, Sussex and London.

Cornwall is one of our most popular designs, and it’s easy to see why.
Built around octagons with a subtle star motif, its softer geometry and gentle rhythm give it a more modern, adaptable feel than many Victorian patterns. It handles subtle customisation very well without losing its character. This client chose a version in Black, White, Pale Grey and Anthracite, framed with a 50 mm diamond border.

You’ll notice the walls and woodwork are still work in progress. Ideally, install a floor like this after decorating is finished to avoid having to remove paint marks. If you need to install a tile design earlier in a project, protect it carefully.

The real story here is the preparation. The hall previously shared engineered wood flooring with the rest of the house. After its removal, the base needed careful levelling and preparation to bring the tiles as close as possible to the adjoining floor height.

Swipe through to follow Ross’s work, and to the final slide to see how the hallway looked before. Thank you to Ross at for a beautifully prepared and installed floor.

Victorian tile designs are more adaptable than people think, and they sit beautifully alongside modern materials and settings.

In this thoughtfully updated Parsons Green home, a classic black-and-white pattern has been reinstated as a period feature. Traditionally, hall tiles would run through to the stairs and around them. Here, the client chose to bring oak boards up to meet the tiles, so our Stevenson 70 pattern, finished with a Dogtooth border, frames the main entrance section of the hall, where it makes a strong first impression.

Thank you to for including us in a beautifully considered project, and to for the photography.

Livingston 70 is an Edwardian-style pattern built around a 70 mm tile size, in a star-and-box structure. A step up in size from the classic 2-inch or today's 50 mm size, it creates a more balanced pattern that suits a wider front path, with a comfortable number of repeats so it doesn't feel overwhelmingly busy.

Here it’s framed with a Ribbon border in Black, White, Red, Linen and Blue, with the red and black 25 mm strips for a refined finish.
Thank you to for a lovely, crisp installation. Swipe through for the design code and colours.

When the room is this confident, the floor has to hold its ground.

This WC is part of the Thrift House project by Owl Interior Design, an Edwardian home extension where every detail was considered. Bold botanical wallpaper, deep raspberry panelling and a period Crapper's cistern fill the space with personality. The tile floor design ties the scheme together without competing with it.

The chequerboard is our Classic 70 mm, with a 50 mm diamond border and three-line detail in Dark Blue, a design chosen to complement the interior.

When spring and summer arrive, gardens begin to flourish once again.

Victorian tiled pathways provide an enduring base of colour and pattern within a changing scheme, their crisp geometry offering both harmony and contrast against rich foliage and flowering borders of a front garden.

As planting grows fuller, soft forms and shifting colours play against the precision of the tiles.

It is this dialogue between living planting and enduring pattern that makes these tiled pathways so compelling.
