Brrrr winter is coming!

As cold northerly winds across Britain might pull the temperatures down to -2 degrees, take a look at our top tips to ensure your garden is braced for the drop in temperatures.

❄️ Bring any tender plants inside to conservatories, greenhouses, homes and sheds

❄️ For tender plants that are left outdoors such as tree ferns, wrap with chicken wire, pack with straw and give them a recycled polythene hat to shed rain

❄️ Repair greenhouses by mending cracks and gaps. Normally greenhouses are only partially heated, so to save costs on heating, why not use fleece (ideally biodegradable) or recycled bubblewrap to fend off the cold

❄️ For frost prone produce such as beetroot, celeriac, storing cabbage and turnips, store undercover, while covering carrots with cardboard. For hardy leeks and parsnips use brushwood, cardboard, fleece, hessian, or woodchips

❄️ Help wildlife by leaving vegetation as long as possible before clearing to provide seeds, insects and foliage to feed birds. Top up bird feeders, erect bird boxes to shelter birds and enable them to identify nesting sites in good time

❄️ Turn off outside water supply and features to allow them to drain. Use a floating ball to avoid ponds completely freezing over

Who’s up for a bracing walk among the gardens? When you think of outdoor spaces, you tend to think of spring or summer bloom, but winter gardens can be just as beautiful.
