Planning News! We’re thrilled to share that planning permission has been granted for the transformation of the iconic Grade II listed Saville Theatre.
Working alongside Yoo Capital, our vision is to restore this historic West End venue to its original purpose as a world-class live performance theatre for the first time in over half a century, while introducing a new citizenM hotels boutique hotel above - creating a vibrant new destination for London’s Theatreland.
Originally designed for the theatre impresario A. E. Fournier, the Saville Theatre first opened its doors at 135–149 Shaftesbury Avenue in 1931. The venue has a storied past - from hosting musicals and plays in the 1930s to legendary live music performances during the Brian Epstein era which included artists such as The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones. Its original interiors were sadly lost following its transformation into a two-screen cinema in 1970, with further screens added after its conversion to an Odeon in 2001.
Our ambition is to honour its rich legacy with a flexible, modern 620+ seat auditorium, alongside the sensitive restoration of the celebrated Art Deco façade and Gilbert Bayes’ 40-metre-long ‘Drama Through the Ages’ frieze.
This project builds on SPPARC’s experience in delivering major cultural and heritage-led transformations, including OlympiaUK and Borough Yards. We are excited to help return the Saville Theatre to its rightful place as a proud beacon of London’s world-leading performing arts scene.
