Liverpool today, surveying the original windows on this listed building.

Painted timber, gauged brick arches over the heads, the big arched lights up in the gables. Plenty of old putty, a few tired cills, and joints that have held for the best part of a century or more.

We go round every window in turn and note what’s original, what’s been patched over the years, and what needs attention. Most of it can be saved. It usually can, if it’s looked after properly.

Doors and shopfronts, made properly.

From a six-panel front door with raised and fielded panels, to a full run of shopfront glazing beneath a 1924 façade, every piece that leaves our workshop is made to suit the building it’s going to.

Some jobs call for crisp mouldings and a deep painted finish. Others need glazed carriage doors with boarded lower panels, or a pair of half-glazed doors set beneath a coloured leaded fanlight. The approach is the same each time: study the proportions, respect the detail, and make it to last.

We fully renovated and repaired this original timber casement window, keeping the frame and all its period charm intact. The right-hand casement now has brand-new leaded glass, with textured obscure glass for bathroom privacy.

To finish, everything was hand-painted inside and out for a durable coat that will last for years to come.

Details like the traditional monkey-tail stays and fasteners are what make period homes special, and we believe they’re worth saving.

Last week we carried out a detailed inspection of the original timber sash windows on this impressive period property.

Every window was individually assessed, looking closely at the condition of the sashes, box frames, sills, glazing, ironmongery, paintwork and previous repairs, together with any signs of decay or structural deterioration.

Using the information recorded during today’s survey, Heritage Window Consultants will now prepare a comprehensive condition report covering every window throughout the property.

The report will clearly document the existing condition of the historic joinery and provide practical recommendations for repair, restoration and, only where genuinely necessary, replacement.

For period and historic buildings, a proper window survey should always come before decisions are made about replacement. Original sash windows are part of the architectural fabric of a building and, in many cases, considerably more can be retained than first thought.

For this North London property, the fixed sections of the existing timber frame were carefully restored rather than unnecessarily replaced, before being retrofitted with toughened slimline double-glazed units.

New timber doors were then traditionally manufactured to suit the existing frame and installed with matching toughened slimline double glazing.

The entire installation was fully hand painted, inside and out, giving the client improved thermal performance while retaining the character and proportions of the original joinery.

These photographs show the same elevation before and after our work.

Rather than introducing bulky modern replacement windows, we retained and fully restored the original box frames, then manufactured new hardwood Georgian sash windows to sit naturally within the building.

The sashes were glazed with some of the finest heritage glass available — 12mm slimline double-glazed units, comprising 4mm hand-drawn glass externally, a 4mm white warm-edge spacer and 4mm toughened glass internally.

Hand-drawn glass isn’t cheap, but on a period property the difference matters. Its gentle movement and imperfections recreate the character of traditional glass beautifully.

Everything was finished by hand, including the final painting.
