Opening up the filter on a boiler service and finding it this clean is a good day for us.

Before we fitted this boiler, we gave the system a thorough power flush and cleared out a lot of dirt so the new boiler started life on a clean system. The filter then catches whatever's still moving around in the pipes, so it doesn't end up inside the boiler and block it up. Checking it at a service shows us how the system is holding up, and as you can see, there's barely anything on this one.

A little bit of debris is normal, which is exactly why the filter is there and why we clean it out every time. It helps your boiler run the way it should and gives it the best chance of a long working life. That's what a proper service is for.

Before you crank the thermostat up this autumn because a room feels chilly, take two seconds to run your hand over the radiators.

If a radiator is warm at the bottom but freezing at the top, that is just trapped air. Grab a bleed key, let the air out until water appears, and you are good to go.

If the top is hot but the bottom stays stone cold, bleeding it will not do anything. That usually means metallic sludge and debris have settled at the bottom of the radiator, blocking the flow. It acts like an insulator, making the room cold and driving your gas bills up because the boiler has to run for hours to compensate.

If your radiators are struggling to heat up evenly across the house, give us a message or call and we can get the system flowing properly again.

The best time to sort your air conditioning is when the builders are still in.

Loft bedrooms and top-floor conversions get notoriously boiling in the summer but getting in early during the renovation stage makes running the pipework and electrics completely seamless.
