J is for Joinery … Our client came to us to remodel their Georgian home near Hampstead Heath. The poor spatial layout of the existing extension was undermining how the family wanted to be together in the house, so we proposed reconfiguring the internal layout and creating a new oak-framed family friendly space.

The main room has birch ply lining the walls and ceilings, and large oak plank floorboards. The birch ceiling is washed with light from a continuous ribbon of clerestory windows. The timber joinery creates different rhythms through the space reflecting the different rhythms of family life. Bookshelves are built into walls, with doorways leading into a series of smaller rooms which include a study, a snug, and a kitchen/ breakfast space.

A beautifully crafted oak stair delivers you from the street level to the living room at garden level. Vertical wooden posts replace a handrail creating a tactile surface around the adjacent wall. We worked closely with the craftsman to ensure an immaculate finish. Internally the timber detailing creates a warm and welcoming place for the family to come together as well as spaces to quietly retreat to. Natural light, ventilation and an improved connection with nature were high priorities in the design.

How would you imagine a home that fosters family togetherness?

I is for Integrated Project Insurance .... supporting innovation by aligning whole project teams around cost, time and quality, promoting a culture of mutual trust, no blame/no claim, and the freedom for decisions to be made on a best-for-project basis.

The award-winning Black Country and Marches Institute of Technology for Dudley College, is a perfect example of how good collaboration can successfully deliver a complex, innovative building project on time and under budget using the Integrated Project Insurance (IPI) model. Our first sketches were guided by the intelligence of the whole team, avoiding waste and dead ends in the design process. The resulting building is lean, with every space and constructional system optimised.

G is for Glazed Tiles … which were used for vertical shading fins and inset balcony reveals within Blows Yard. This residential development is a four-storey building containing three apartments on a tight urban site adjacent Borough Market.

The bespoke, green-glazed stone fins are set within aluminium profiles, which seal the exposed junction of the tiles and match the colour of the dark grey window frames. The fins were designed by Cullinan Studio in collaboration with specialist subcontractors utilising Schueco curtain walling brackets. This allowed channels to be fixed to the brackets and the glazed stone tiles to be slid into place on either side.

The apartments were designed to achieve Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. Strategies included high acoustic and thermal performance, including to windows, along with efficient water use and generous external planting.

F is for Flexible Workspace … which we were able to create at the Foundry, a co-working hub and HQ. We reused and repurposed an existing canal-side warehouse, retaining 80% of the existing building fabric whilst providing a naturally ventilated, healthy workplace, helping us to reduce our energy use by 50% compared to our previous office.

Flexibility within the workspace continues to evolve through monitoring our energy use and working habits, and how our environment affects our wellbeing. Following a user occupancy survey, we ascertained a need for more variability within our open plan space. We implemented simple measures, including new (secondhand) furniture to create a choice of workspaces, more plants to provide a healthy connection with nature, and reorganisation of office and personal storage spaces. These interventions have gone a long way to maintaining and improving happiness, and thereby the productivity of our team.

The flexible approach to the foundry has created a thriving multidisciplinary hub for innovative organisations working in the built environment; reflecting the collaborations needed in the construction industry going forward.

E is for Earth Berm Walls… the in Newcastle is bounded by earth berm walls and ‘hugged’ by the surrounding landscape, as if it were emerging from the earth. In challenging times, the charity offers social, emotional and practical support to people affected by cancer. Maggie’s Centres are designed to be uplifting buildings where people feel inspired and supported, in a comfortable, home-like environment. Our challenge was to create a calming, therapeutic space in the middle of a non-descript hospital car park.

The building orientation faces south towards the courtyard, which ensures good daylight throughout. The courtyard, enclosed by earth berms, provides a connection to all rooms. By being sheltered by earth and a green roof, good levels of insulation are achieved, as well as providing shelter and privacy to the building’s external faces.

D is for Daylight… a key ethos in Cullinan Studio’s design of the new Catkin Centre and Sunflower House mental health facility at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. Despite being a clinical building and secure mental health facility, we wanted to ensure they were closely connecting to the natural world. The links between nature, mental health and physical health are now well established. A significant body of evidence shows that a connection to nature can improve patient outcomes and recovery times, as well as reducing stress and improving mental wellbeing.

Natural daylighting is important in creating uplifting, positive and non-institutional environments. The buildings are flooded with natural light creating connections to gardens and greenery, providing a multi-sensory instrument for healing. The timber ‘cone’ in the social waiting area brings daylight into the centre of the space, as well as providing the tactile warmth of a natural material.

The Catkin Centre and Sunflower House takes a new approach to hospital design, through cloistered routes surrounding two courtyards with the clinical rooms gathered around a central outdoor garden room offering views and activities. The wider ‘eddies’ in the corridors connect patients to the garden, so that even when indoors they can sit alongside flowers, plants and daylight. The cloisters also provide a legible layout so users can easily orientate themselves within the building, particularly important for making children feel at home in the space, so promoting feelings of security and reducing stress. Gone are the long, intimidating, windowless corridors of typical clinical buildings. With plenty of seating, daylight, and views outside, the circulation is designed as a place to be, not just to pass through.

How would you Imagine how nature could benefit young people’s mental health?

SPOTLIGHT: Our Midland’s Team!

Our Midlands team has been actively coordinating the final stages of the Animal Care and Welfare Building project for of Technology. Set for completion later this summer, the refurbished building will provide purpose-built spaces to house the Animal Care department, which has had multiple homes across the college campus.

During a recent site visit, the Cullinan team was joined by Rhyta, one of our mentees and a recent graduate from Part 1 architectural studies program. This visit concluded a series of engaging sessions with the students, including project briefings and design activities hosted at our Nottingham office.

Being on site provides young professionals with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in planning, coordination, and problem-solving, essential for managing day-to-day challenges on a live construction site. This experience is further enhanced by a collaborative environment, where open communication and joint decision-making drive innovative problem-solving and improved project outcomes.

In light of 62 Camden Mews going on the market, we visited the self-built house of our late founder Ted Cullinan and his wife Roz, on what, serendipitously, would also have been his birthday! His daughter, Kate welcomed us and gave a tour around her old family home. Gathering around the garden terrace Kate shared stories of growing up there and remembering Ted constructing the house during weekends with the help of friends and family. Completed in the mid-1960s, the project stands as an architectural manifesto: the upside-down passive-solar house turned 90 degrees to face south and was built against a party wall, bringing delight and inspiration to so many visitors. It was rightly Grade II* listed in 2007.

Roddy Langmuir, a Cullinan Studio Practice Leader, notes, “It would be ‘amazing if Ted’s house could continue to be visited by young architects learning their craft – as it has for decades. Could it be taken up by a university as their London research base, or a trust or [other] institution? The house is a visual essay in the layering of construction and a gentle manifesto on how a compact home on a small city site can follow the sun and celebrate nature … it inspires people with or without formal training!”

C is for Courtyard … a typology reflected in Law House, designed by Cullinan Studio in 1966 for Peter and Anne Law. The house is arranged in an L-shape around a raised courtyard on the south side, taking advantage of the natural views of the Downland setting. The client was closely involved looking for a modern home, whilst incorporating at its core the existing cottage. With the main entrance at first floor level, the house is sensitively incorporated into the steeply sloping site to fit discreetly into its natural surroundings, further aided by a mix of materials - brick at lower level with timber and glazing above - and grass-topped roofs.

Later the studio designed an annexe for Anne Law’s mother on the site, and the practice was responsible for the sensitive refurbishment programme completed 10 years ago.
