It was a pleasure for Winchmore Brickwork Group (WBG) to support McAleer & Rushe and Construction Youth Trust last week at the Construction Bootcamp held at our Tottenham Printworks project.
Representing Winchmore Brickwork Group on the day were our Construction Director, Adrian Murray, and Social Value & Training Manager, Nicola Bartlett, who spent time with the participants explaining what a career in brickwork and construction can offer, before giving everyone the opportunity to get hands-on and lay bricks themselves.
The level of enthusiasm shown by the young people was fantastic. It was great to see so many participants fully engaged, asking thoughtful questions and genuinely enjoying the practical bricklaying experience. For many, it was their first opportunity to experience a construction site and understand the skill, pride and teamwork involved in our trade.
The biggest success of the event? Several students have already expressed an interest in pursuing a career in bricklaying and have submitted applications for apprenticeships with Winchmore Brickwork Group (WBG). We look forward to welcoming them for interviews in the coming weeks and hopefully helping some of them take the first step towards a rewarding career in our industry.
Whilst events such as these help us meet our Section 106 commitments, for us they represent something much more important. As an industry, we all have a responsibility to inspire, encourage and invest in the next generation of construction professionals. Skills shortages continue to affect our sector, and the only long-term solution is to engage with young people, demonstrate the opportunities available and create genuine pathways into employment.
A special thank you must go to Kimberley McGinty, Social Value Manager at McAleer & Rushe, whose organisation and enthusiasm made the event such a success. The feedback from the young people has been exceptional, with many now considering bricklaying as a genuine career path, which is exactly the outcome we all hoped to achieve.
Finally, thank you to everyone involved in making the event possible. Together, we're not just building projects โ we're helping build the future of our industry.
