A new chapter for Guangzhou's waterfront begins with Taikoo Li Julong Wan.
Once a working waterfront and a key node on the Maritime Silk Road, Julong Wan grew around warehouses, factories and the waterways that connected Guangzhou to the wider world. While many of these buildings fell into disuse, more than 400 trees, including banyans up to 150 years old, continued to thrive. This industrial heritage and established landscape provided the starting point for the site's resurgence.
Rather than clearing the site and starting again, Taikoo Li Julong Wan works with what was already there. Former industrial buildings have been carefully adapted for contemporary use, while the masterplan is shaped around existing trees and their root systems. This approach has delivered a more than 50% reduction in carbon emissions compared to conventional new-build retail.
As the wider Julong Wan regeneration progresses towards completion, the opening of Taikoo Li offers an early glimpse of the district's future: a place where heritage can be experienced firsthand and nature remains woven into the everyday life of the city.
