Geological Map of the Turkestan region - Geologicheskaia karta Turkestanskago Kraia (1884)
With Uzbekistan making their World Cup debut this evening, we thought we would share this recently digitised map from our collections 🇺🇿 At 1:1,260,000 scale on six sheets, the map shows the historical region of Turkestan, which today comprises Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.
Uzbekistan is on the western third of the image stretching from the Aral Sea, heading down in the middle centre where Samarkand and Tashkent are located on the route of the Silk Road, skirting the Pamir mountain range. Uzbekistan is one of only two countries in the world to be doubly landlocked, the other being Liechtenstein.
The map's creators, Gennady Danilovich Romanovsky (1830-1906) and Ivan Vasilʹevich Mushketov (1850–1902) were geologists and mining engineers associated with the Mining Institute in St. Petersberg, Russia. The highly detailed map is the culmination of their many years exploring Turkestan and is the first geological map of the region.
