How can geoscientists contribute to a responsible, investable energy transition?

Join us on Tuesday 9 July at 12:00 BST for a new session of our 'Opportunities for Geoscientists in the Energy Transition' webinar series. This session turns to critical minerals and elements, exploring career transitions, transferable skills and the multi-disciplinary collaborations needed to deliver impact at scale.

Join experienced speakers Blanca Cantalejo, Sam Bolton, Fraser Gardiner and Alex Hudson, and our Chair Bas Spaargaren, as they discuss opportunities in critical minerals and battery metals exploration.

More time to submit your abstract! The deadline for submissions for WCSB12 has been extended to Wednesday, 15 July 2027.

Present your research on any aspect of sampling and blending to an interdisciplinary audience. The hybrid conference on 25-27 November aims to debate concepts and ideas for a standardised approach to sampling embodied in the Theory of Sampling (TOS), highlighting as many fields as possible, including mining and minerals, food and feed, medicine and pharma, and the environment.

Geological Map of the Turkestan region - Geologicheskaia karta Turkestanskago Kraia (1884)

With Uzbekistan making their World Cup debut this evening, we thought we would share this recently digitised map from our collections 🇺🇿 At 1:1,260,000 scale on six sheets, the map shows the historical region of Turkestan, which today comprises Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Uzbekistan is on the western third of the image stretching from the Aral Sea, heading down in the middle centre where Samarkand and Tashkent are located on the route of the Silk Road, skirting the Pamir mountain range. Uzbekistan is one of only two countries in the world to be doubly landlocked, the other being Liechtenstein.

The map's creators, Gennady Danilovich Romanovsky (1830-1906) and Ivan Vasilʹevich Mushketov (1850–1902) were geologists and mining engineers associated with the Mining Institute in St. Petersberg, Russia. The highly detailed map is the culmination of their many years exploring Turkestan and is the first geological map of the region.

📢 New deadline!

There's still time to submit your abstract for our conference on geoscience models.

Submissions are invited across any aspect of modelling in relation to the geosciences, from conceptual to digital outcrop models, to models that integrate multiple forms of data, to full-physics analogue and numerical process models.

The conference aims to progress answers to the following and more questions:

• What makes a geoscience model useful?
• How should conceptual, analogue and numerical models be integrated in geoscience?
• Do digital outcrop models have significant untapped potential?
• What new process models remain to be developed?

Join the discussion and submit your abstract before 29 June ➡️ www.geolsoc.org.uk/geomodels

The Geological Society offers extensive networking opportunities for those working in - or studying - geoscience. Wherever you are based, there is a Regional Group of the Geological Society in your area offering networking opportunities at regular meetings both on and offline.

This isn’t just the UK! Alongside our UK Regional Groups and our Hong Kong Regional Group, we are excited to announce the creation of a *new* Regional Group in Australia!

This volunteer led group will provide a local framework for networking, professional development and community building activities, helping to strengthen engagement and support for members across Australia.
