This Putney refurbishment happened in two phases, so the family could keep living in the house.
The ground floor came first: a new kitchen, built-in joinery and internal Crittall.

There's something useful about seeing a drawing beside the finished room. One is full of decisions. The other has already become ordinary life.

Some houses evolve room by room.

This one waited more than fifty years, then every floor was reconsidered in one project. At the top, the new main bedroom opens onto a terrace set into the zinc roof, overlooking the park.

The house has just picked up an award.

Ten seconds is enough to show the finished house.

It tells you almost nothing about the decisions that got it there.

A few completed AURA projects.

Floor area is only one way to make a room feel larger.

Here, the extension keeps the footprint simple and spends some of the design on height instead: a pitched roof, exposed structure and glazing right up into the gable.

A simple footprint. Much more room above your head.

Nobody comes and says, “I’d like a splayed lining, please.”

They say, “this room feels dark.”

Then the job is turning that sentence into a hundred small decisions nobody will ever know the names of.

This is one of them.

Every profession teaches you to notice something different.

Ask an architect about a house and we’ll probably start talking about the plan.

This client was a cook. So the conversation started with the kitchen: more daylight, more working space, and somewhere people could gather.

The side-return and rear extension grew from that.

It’s a useful reminder that the best residential briefs often start with how somebody actually spends their day.

This time next year, the house you keep talking about changing could be the one you’re coming home to.

A decent thought to start the week with.

Not every scroll is a waste of time. One led to this extension.

The owners found AURA on Instagram after buying a 1952 house near Tooting Bec Common. It had never been extended or altered, the layout didn’t flow, and they wanted more daylight and room for life with two young children.

A rear extension, corner glazing and rooflights gave the house a much brighter next chapter.

Something to bear in mind if you find yourself looking at kitchens on your phone this weekend.

Conservation area, sure. The kitchen is a bit less conservative.
