🎉 We’re thrilled to announce that The On Call Group has been shortlisted for the British Security Awards! 🌟

Special shoutout to our amazing engineers, Dan Harper and Carl Easson, for their great work installing a CCTV system at Furs and Feathers animal sanctuary. 🐱 They’re now in the running for Installer of the Year!

Our CEO, Lee Hosking, was moved by the sanctuary’s plea on social media and we were happy to help. 💪

We’re looking forward to the awards luncheon at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in July. Fingers crossed! 🤞

Thank you, Andrew Cooper, and the British Security Industry Association, for recognising our team’s efforts.

Wickham Security customers were given a chance to air their views on the take-over of the company by the On Call Group during a day of informative sessions in Bromley.

On Call Group Chairman Michael Vry invited customers to drop-in sessions at the Bromley Court Hotel to discuss any concerns or reservations they might have since the former family-run business was absorbed into his group.

The move came as part of £8.2 million worth of acquisitions in the last 2-3 years.

The event was a huge success with around 30 customers attending – all who left understanding that On Call Group had to step in to keep the business going after the former owners took a back seat due to retirement.

Micheal Vry, On Call chairman said: “The family who ran Wickham Security did a fantastic job and it is a business we were happy to take over.

“We realise there have been some concerns, as you would expect with the country’s fastest growing independent alarm company taking over a local concern, but we are listening, and we are here to help”.

Among the major issues raised were:

• The closure of the Wickham shop on Wickham High Street. It was explained that the shop was closing anyway due to rent increases by the landlord which the shop could not sustain amid a drop in profits.

• The need to upgrade some of the old Wickham systems due to the PSTN telephone network changes nationally.

• The visits by senior security advisors were necessary to check what systems people had and to ascertain that they had the correct level of security needed.

• Complaints that engineers were coming down from the Midlands. It was clarified all the Wickham engineers had been kept on, one had subsequently left, but the others were being supported by engineers from outside of the area.

• These engineers were based out of the Bromley Court Hotel to cover the huge scale of jobs in the area and using a local hotel brings money into the local economy.

• Customers with issues needing maintenance or who had not yet been serviced were booked in so that those issues could be addressed as a matter of urgency.

• Any customers who had not had the welcome letter sent to all when On Call took over Wickham were asked to let the office know so that these could be resent.

Mr Vry added: “There are also teething issues when you acquire a new business – especially one so popular locally as Wickham is.

“There will be people who feel we did make mistakes when we took over and we hold up our hands if we didn’t do everything as people would have liked – but we are working hard to put these things right.

“Please talk to us if you have any concerns. Our offices and our phonelines are open and supported by our on call engineers 24 hours a day.”

Security steps to stop car thieves in their tracks

An escalation in the theft of cars from the driveways of homes in Wickham and Bromley has left homeowners scrambling for security deterrents.

Gangs, targeting cars under cover of darkness have struck more than half a dozen times in the last two weeks taking high profile vehicles and stripping valuable car parts from others.
Among the recent incidents was the theft of a Toyota Cruiser taken from a driveway in Biggin Hill and a Volvo XC90 which was targeted on Pickhurst Rise.

Other homeowners in Orpington and West Wickham have discovered their cars haven’t been taken but many valuable parts have been stripped such as BMW steering wheel components or airbags.

Today, Wickham Security, who look after almost 3.000 homes in the area, offered a few helpful security tips to help owners stop thieves in their tracks.

Chairman of Wickham Security Michael Vry said: “Car theft is unfortunately on the rise across the country, but the Wickham area is becoming a real hot spot.

“You can never make your car completely impenetrable but there are some steps you can take to protect your vehicle, your home and your family and we are always available to give advice where we can.”

10 top Security tips for preventing your car from theft

1. CCTV – not only protects your home but your car too – cameras can alert you that someone is on your drive and catch anyone tampering with your car in high visibility images which can help the police in their investigation later.

2. Having a house alarm with a built-in panic alarm can be invaluable if you catch intruders on your driveway as it gives you the chance to summon help quickly via a simple button alerting the monitoring station and your key holders.

3. Although some wireless alarms can be deactivated using a simple wifi blocking device which criminals can buy online – ours have high frequency air waves which are harder to pe*****te.

4. The cameras such as Risco which are among those supplied by us have RF jamming devices which alert a homeowner as soon as someone tries to block the cameras.

5. Steering wheel locks – not only are they a visual deterrent but they take time to remove making it more likely that a thief will be caught in the act.

6. Keep valuables out of sight – a wallet or laptop case even a baby’s pram left in the car can be a target. Keep valuables safe and avoid costly window repairs or forced locks.

7. GET an anti RFID wallet. Keeping your keys and fob in one of these secure pouches stops car thieves from being able to unlock your car using technology without your knowledge.

8. Window etching can cost as little as £20 and is available at many motoring outlets such as Halfords meaning thieves find it hard to eradicate your VIN – vehicle identification number.

9. If your home is protected by a Pyronix alarm system ask our team about the new car defenders- a simple yellow tag which fits on your steering wheel when you park at home and triggers the house alarm if tampered with.

WHY WE LIKE MONDAYS BUT DON’T LIKE FRIDAYS AT WICKHAM

Friday may be everyone’s favourite day of the week but that also includes burglars – a recent survey has revealed.

Wickham Security has seen a report from the Office for National Statistics* which reveals that one home in the UK is burgled every 165 seconds with the most common day for a home invasion the day before the weekend.

Crime figures show that break-ins are less likely to happen on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays with Mondays being the safest day with just 7.4 per cent of all burglaries reported.

By the end of the week however the likelihood of your home being broken into shoots up with 21.6 per cent of reported burglaries being committed on a Friday.

Police believe this is because Friday tends to be one of the most social days of the week when people go out after work and often post their location on social media giving burglars the green light that their homes may be empty.

As crimes such as burglary are often done to feed the criminals’ own needs and habits, Fridays also mean stolen goods can be sold off easily over the weekend.

These worrying statistics of course can be avoided with a monitored burglar alarm which is why at Wickham Security we urge everyone to consider protecting their home.

We offer a wide range of security systems including fully monitored alarms which are backed up by the support of an ARC – alarm receiving centre.

In the event of an activation, the monitoring station will attempt to contact you and your keyholders until they get a response and if they cannot reach anyone, they will call for a guarded response to your property who in turn will summon police if required.

Wickham Security also recommend that you set your alarm not just at night, but in the day too even if you are only popping out for a few minutes.

The statistics show that between 10am and 3pm is the prime time for a break-in and not as often late at night as the media might lead us to believe.

Mick Vry, Chairman of Wickham Security said: “The peace of mind in having a fully monitored alarm system means that day or night or whatever day of the week, your home is protected.

“The cost of installing a system is a small price to pay when compared to the damage, stress and heartache of falling victim to a home invasion.”
