If you’re digging down to build foundations anyway why not go that step further to build a basement, extending living space on your existing footprint!

Sometimes the best solution isn’t the one that was on the original plans.

On this basement project, the staircase was originally designed as a straight run. But once we looked at how it would work within the garden, we realised an L-shaped staircase would give the client a much better outcome.

The straight staircase would have meant removing a flower bed and possibly relocating the client’s garden office. By changing the staircase layout, we were able to work around the existing garden and keep the office and flower bed untouched.

This is one of the benefits of having an experienced basement construction team involved throughout the build. Plans are important, but so is looking at how those plans actually work once construction is underway.

We’re constantly checking the design, the site and the client’s requirements to make sure we’re delivering the best practical solution — not simply building exactly what was drawn months earlier.

Basement construction is all about finding the right solution for the space, the property and the people who are going to use it.

Sometimes a small change can make a big difference.

Concrete pour day on site in Wimbledon!

Today we’re pouring the concrete for the new staircase and one of the structural piles.

It’s one of those stages of a basement build where you really start to see the structure taking shape.

A lot of work goes into the preparation beforehand, but there’s something satisfying about seeing the concrete finally going in.

Thanks to for the concrete pumping, for the eco concrete and the team for doing a great job !

HOW DO YOU GET A DIGGER OUT OF A BASEMENT?!

This is one of those things you don’t necessarily think about when you’re planning a basement…

You’ve got to get the digger in — but eventually you’ve got to get it back out again!

Once you’re several metres underground, you can’t exactly just drive it up the ramp and off site.

Sometimes the answer is a crane.

This is the digger on our Wakefield basement project being lifted out after doing its job.

And this is the bit people don’t always see when they look at a finished basement.

There’s a LOT of planning that goes into getting everything in and out of a basement excavation — diggers, concrete, steel, materials, spoil, pumps… and eventually the machinery itself.

You have to think about the whole job before you even start digging.

That’s what makes basement construction so interesting — and sometimes pretty challenging!

If you’re thinking about building, converting or digging out a basement and have a question, ask us.
