I worked from the kitchen table for long enough to know how hard it is. You clear away the breakfast things, shut the dog in the other room and hope nobody wanders downstairs halfway through a video call.

For Natalie, a counsellor in Surrey, the kitchen table was never an option. Her clients need somewhere private and quiet, where they can talk without wondering who's in the next room.

So we built her a 3.3m x 2.7m garden room with its own door and a desk under a tall window looking out onto the garden. It took us under two weeks.

The interior is all Natalie's work, and she's done a brilliant job: framed prints, plants on the shelves, a rug underfoot. It feels calm the moment you step inside, which is what a counselling room needs. We always leave that part to the customer, because that's how it becomes theirs.

It's fully insulated with air conditioning, so it's comfortable for sessions in January and July. It was plastered and ready to use the day we finished.

Here's what Natalie said in her Google review:

"We absolutely love our garden office. It was a really easy process and felt very listened to. We couldn't be happier and would highly recommend!" ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Your client is paying for an hour of calm. They shouldn't have to get past the dog first. 🐕

Anyone who's run treatments from a spare room knows how it goes. The doorbell goes, and the dog loses it. The kids are home. Someone's in the kitchen. Your client walks through the hallway, past the coats and the shoes, into a room that was a bedroom this morning. You do good work, and the ten minutes either side of it quietly undoes some of it.

This garden room was built as a therapy room, and the point of it is everything that happens before the appointment even starts. Clients come down the side of the house to their own door. Charred larch outside, bi-folds that open the whole end onto the garden, treatment table with room to walk right around it. It's quiet, it's private, and for that hour it belongs to them. Nothing about it says spare bedroom.

We're getting more of these enquiries than we used to, and it's usually the same story. Rent and rates only go one way. People who've spent years building a loyal client list are working out whether they still need to pay someone else for the room they see them in.

Rent is a number you pay forever and own nothing at the end of. This room is paid for. It's theirs. It'll still be there in ten years, working for them instead of a landlord.

Fully insulated and fully plastered, so it's a proper working room in January, not just July.

If you're paying for a room somewhere else, or making do with one at home that was never meant for it, fill in our contact form, link in bio, and we'll start with a free conversation about what would fit in your garden.

Nine square metres. And one very good corner.

Some people rule themselves out of getting a garden room because they look at the garden, decide there isn't space, and keep working at the kitchen table with the dog going mad in the background.

This one in Frimley is 3m x 3m. Nine square metres. A desk, a chair, a bookcase, and a door you can shut behind you at half five.

The corner is what makes it work. Instead of a solid wall, the French doors run straight into a full-height fixed window, to create a dual aspect. Sat at the desk, you're looking down the garden in two directions at once. That's the difference between a small room and a small room that feels open.

Then look up. The roof overhangs on two sides, and the cedar soffit has been hand-cut and mitred so the boards meet cleanly at the corner.

Fully insulated, steel-frame floor, plastered and ready to decorate.

A room that's just yours, even at 3m by 3m.

The garden room usually goes where the shed is. So we built the shed into it.

Once someone has decided on a garden room, the next question is usually about the shed.

Garden rooms tend to go exactly where the shed is, because that's the flat corner already doing very little. Which is fine until you remember the mower, the tools, the bikes and four boxes of Christmas decorations all live in there.

So this one in Walton-on-Thames has a storeroom built into it. Office through the French doors, store alongside at 1.2m wide with its own external door, so nobody is carrying a strimmer through the room they work in.

1.2m is the width we keep coming back to. Any narrower and it stops being a storeroom and becomes a long thin cupboard you shove things into and never sort out again.

The store is lined in OSB rather than plastered, and that's on purpose. It takes knocks without marking, and you can screw a hook, a rack or a shelf straight into any point of the wall. Every outer wall is insulated, store included.

A room that's just yours, and somewhere to put the lawnmower.

Wondering where your shed stuff would go? Fill in our contact form, and we'll work it out with you. 🌿

The best seat in the office was taken by 8am. 🐶

The kids went back to school last week. The house is quiet again for the first time since July.

You're still working at the kitchen table. And so, apparently, is the dog.

September's fine. December is less fine, when it's dark by four, the table has to be cleared for dinner at five, and there's nowhere to leave a half-finished piece of work.

This is the alternative. Warm, fully insulated, properly plastered walls, and a door you can actually shut at six. Someone has already decided it's the best seat in the house.

A room that's just yours. Mostly.

Start the conversation this month, and you could be out there well before Christmas.

Most home gyms fail for a boring reason. Not motivation. Ceiling height.

This power rack with a chin-up bar needs more head height than a standard room gives you. So we built this one taller from the drawing stage, before a single section was made. Rubber flooring, treadmill, rack, weights, and enough height above the bar to actually use it.

That's the difference between a room you put a gym in and a room designed around one.

On the timing, honestly: nobody needs another New Year, new you speech. But a standard height room takes around four weeks to make and one to three weeks to install. Go taller, and there's a planning question worth looking at early. The general rule is 2.5m if the room sits within 2m of a boundary, or up to 3m if it's at least 2m off every boundary, though every property is different and that one is for your architect or your local planning office to confirm. An application usually adds around 8 weeks. So if you want to be training in your garden before January, October and November are the slots that get you there. If yours needs planning, make it October.

Fully insulated, so it's usable in February, not only July.

Their garden was small. Small enough that they’d written the idea off before they called us.

3m x 2.7m is the footprint. It sounds tiny until you’re stood in it. Sliding doors down one side, a full-height window, and enough floor for a proper working room rather than a corner with a desk shoved in it.

She’s a therapist, so it had to work for clients as well as for her. Somewhere quiet, warm and separate, with a door that isn’t the front door of the house.

And they’ve still got a garden. That’s the bit people don’t expect. A room only takes over the plot if it’s been designed off a standard drawing instead of around the space you’ve actually got.

Finished in Thermalwood, a thermally treated timber that weathers beautifully and is built to stay outside.
Nine working days on site. All that’s left is the decorating, and that’s their bit.

If you’ve looked at your garden and decided it’s too small, that’s usually the conversation worth having. Fill in our contact form link in bio, and we’ll come back to you within 24 hours.

Half six, you’re in the gym. 💪
Half eight, you’re on the deck with a drink, 🍹watching the sunset over the hills. 🌅
Same building. One metre apart.

That’s what the canopy and the decking do. Without them, the room is somewhere you go and then come back from. With them, the end of the garden becomes somewhere you actually sit, which for most people is the bit of the garden they’ve never once used.

Inside it’s a proper gym. There’s a storeroom built into the side too, with a door cut flush into the cladding so you’d walk past it.

Fully insulated, so this works in February as well as August.

The garden’s not big enough for storage AND a proper room. That’s what most people assume, right up until they see this one.

Sofa and TV on one side. A hidden storeroom on the other, tucked behind a door built straight into the cladding so you’d never know it’s there. And it’s got its own access door out to the back gate, so nothing gets carried through the snug.

Same footprint most people write off as “too small” or “too awkward.”

If your garden’s an odd shape, comment SPACE and we’ll tell you honestly whether it could work.

A full house and garden build in Esher, and until the very end, you’d have no idea what it is about to become.
Black metal cladding, bronze glazed aluminium doors, a full window running the width of the front. Dual cladding, because one finish wasn’t going to cut it on this one.
The outside’s finished. The 🤫 company moves in next for the fit-out.
This is what fully bespoke actually looks like. Not an off-the-shelf garden room, but a room built around exactly what someone wanted.
Fill in our contact form (link in bio) if you want to talk about what’s possible in your garden.
