July gave us a first look at Len House. The original building, known as Rootes Garage, inspired the iconic Fisher-Price toy.

We saw one chapter close as we said goodbye to Anna after a successful placement at Hollaway, while new ones began as we raised the roof at Windwhistle and our Kent studio neared completion.

Curious about the brewery.

We revisited Curious Brewery, renowned for its award-winning premium beers and ciders, to see how the building, designed by Hollaway Studio, has embedded itself within its urban landscape.

Designed to bring brewing, dining and hospitality together, the project makes its process visible.

External brewing tanks sit outside the main building, freeing up internal space while placing the mechanics of brewing at the forefront of the visitor experience, turning production itself into part of the architecture.

Alongside the restored Coastguard Cottages, a new contemporary apartment building introduces a confident architectural contrast between Victorian heritage and modern coastal living.

Hollaway Studio carefully balanced preservation with contemporary intervention, using curved forms, expansive glazing and muted coastal tones to respond to the surrounding landscape and uninterrupted views across the English Channel.

Designed in dialogue with the historic terrace, the new building forms part of the next chapter in the site’s evolving coastal story.

Hollaway Studio were appointed to restore and renew the iconic Coastguard Cottages in St Margaret’s Bay. Positioned high above the shoreline with uninterrupted views across the English Channel, the Grade II listed terrace was originally built in 1884 to house coastguards and their families.
Bombed during the Second World War, the Victorian landmark still carries the scars of its history. Following careful restoration and contemporary intervention, the Coastguard Cottages continue their long relationship with the coastline.

Westview is clad in charred white painted timber. The process begins by scorching the wood until the natural resin rises to the surface, creating its durability. A wire brush is then worked along the grain to remove the soft wood, before two coats of white paint are applied. Finally, the timber is sanded back to reveal the grain beneath.

The driftwood table by Piet Hein Eek sits beneath the Corten-surrounded window at Westview Cottage, anchoring the dining space between the main living area and the galley kitchen. Framed by expansive glazing, the kitchen draws views directly across the Dungeness landscape towards the lighthouses.

Externally, the composition retains the ad-hoc and layered character of Dungeness architecture, whilst internally the spaces are calm, connected and unified through light, material and view.

Westview Cottage is designed around light, framed views and a material palette drawn directly from the surrounding landscape of Dungeness. Large openings stretch towards the coastline, distant lighthouses, Dungeness Power Station and the barren desert.

Salt and pepper polished concrete floors echo the texture of the shingle beyond. Throughout the house, the boundary between inside and outside is deliberately blurred, allowing the changing light and coastal landscape to become part of the everyday experience of the home.
