PART 4 OF 5
Extra Virgin Olive Oil, the Digestive System, the Gut Microbiome and Polyphenols
The gut is not just where food is digested.
It is also home to trillions of microorganisms that form the gut microbiome — an ecosystem influenced by diet, fibre, medications, sleep, stress, physical activity and many other factors.
In Part 4 of our educational series, we explain how extra virgin olive oil may fit into this picture.
High-quality EVOO contains phenolic compounds that are being studied for their interactions with the gut environment, oxidative stress and microbial activity.
But olive oil alone is not the answer.
The microbiome benefits from a varied dietary pattern rich in:
vegetables
pulses
fruit
whole grains
nuts
seeds
herbs
Extra virgin olive oil works best as part of that pattern.
That is why combinations such as lentils with vegetables, beans with tomatoes, chickpeas with herbs or whole grains with greens make so much nutritional sense.
The message is simple:
The gut does not need a miracle food. It needs a consistent supply of real, varied food.
