The outdoor area of our R64 Villa😍
Complete with outdoor gourmet area for lovely barbecues with family and friends, a pool, landscaped garden and a range of seating areas.
We have incorporated as much greenery as possible and a selection of different types of shading devices to address and take advantage of the warm climate in this lovely location between the lake and the sea.
We are starting the detailed stage of this project but will be sharing our process of design right from the very start.
We are an architectural design studio focusing on the design of positive, life enhancing homes. Homes that are kind to the people that live in them and to the environment around them.

Our Fairview ground floor extension project design compared to the original ground floor layout.

In close collaboration with our client, we not only achieved an extra 20m2 in floor area but most importantly a quality space that they can enjoy with friends and family.

The inclusion of a home office was an important requirement for this project. The client needed a home office that was enclosed, private and away from any distractions. This was a big challenge for a narrow period home, we couldn’t just include it as part of a transient space or in a room in the middle of the floor plate without access to light and a form of natural ventilation. Our solution was to use the space of the original kitchen and extend this space out just enough to be able to fit an opening roof light. This room will not only have access to natural ventilation but also excellent quality of light for the desk space.

The kitchen takes the place of the original dining room with much improved space and worktop surface. An island is positioned at the end of the kitchen with a sink and space for 2 to 3 bar stools and connecting with the new dining space. Perfect for dinner parties and family celebrations.

Just beside the dining area is a flexible space that can be used as a snug or as an extension to the dining area for special occasions. With an extending dining table up to 15 people would be able to enjoy a meal together!

The snug itself is a perfect space for relaxation and to read a book by the window seat with lovely views to the garden outside.

We have loved working on this project and are so happy for our clients! The build is due to finish within the next month or so and we are excited to see the end result!

Selecting the right shades for one our next projects from one of my favourite brands of eco paints. As well as the right colour palette it is very important to us that all paints we specify are healthy, VOC free and sustainable at the same time as being easy to apply, with good coverage and long lasting.

So nice to see the progress that has been made on our Fairview project, a ground floor single storey rear extension for a lovely family in Woodford Green.

Floor joists have been installed, as well as a good section of the outer layer of single bricks. The builders are awaiting the arrival of the insulation so they can build the inner layer of blocks.

The damp proof course has been installed and so have the air bricks which will ventilate the air gap under the suspended floor.

Another shot of the kitchen in our Lechmere project. Here we have used mosaic tiles creating a 3D pattern matching the pattern on the floor from our previous post and used light grey grout to give the pattern some structure without over enhancing it.

We love the combination of the dark blue kitchen cupboard units with the dark golden brown Iroko wood worktop. We have gone for this specific type of wood for its fantastic golden tones, for its longevity and because it does not easily stain or need resealing as often as other wood types. Those brass handles…love it!!

And the little flick switch adding a little charm in the background…

This week I had a conversation with a client that made me think about the lighting we used on our Lechmere project.

This client doesn’t like and doesn’t want to install recessed spotlights in their new kitchen. There are many types of lighting that can be used instead of recessed spotlights that might add more interest and character to a room.

Recessed lights have their place and function and work well for many projects, but are definitely not a must have if you don’t like them. Depending on the size of the room and ceiling heights they may not even be effective or recomended.

Whatever your preference, it is likely you will have at least two or three types of lighting in your kitchen space for different functions: task lighting, ambient lighting and accent lighting.

We will be talking about the different functions of lighting in a space and which specific lighting solutions and types of luminaires to use for each function in future posts.
