Commissioning a luxury interior designer is one of the most consequential decisions you will make for a property. Done well, it shapes how you live for years and compounds in value long after the contractors have left. Done poorly, you are left with an expensive space that never quite settles.
The difference usually comes down to how carefully you chose the studio, and what you looked for.
A portfolio tells part of the story. But the more revealing question is whether the work is responsive: does it reflect a studio capable of reading different buildings, different clients, different ways of living? Your property is not like any other. It has its own proportions, its own history, its own character. A studio worth commissioning will start there.
Specialism carries real weight for high-end residential and period buildings. A practice that has spent years on complex refurbishments brings established relationships with specialist contractors, deep knowledge of procurement and bespoke manufacture timelines, and fluency with the planning constraints that govern significant works in London's most desirable neighbourhoods. These are not incidental. They determine whether a project runs cleanly and arrives at what it was meant to be.
Process is the other thing most clients undervalue. A major interior commission is, in large part, a feat of sustained rigour: approvals, procurement, site coordination, budget management, and the alignment of many moving parts toward a single vision. How a studio manages all of that will shape the experience as much as any design decision.
And then there is listening. The designer who can deliver something genuinely extraordinary is the one who arrives with curiosity, not a fixed idea. Pay attention, in early conversations, to how much of the exchange is them asking and how much is them speaking.
We have written about this in more detail on the Phasezero blog, for anyone navigating this decision in London and the surrounding area.
