A set of two hybrid rack cabinets/desks that will be complementary to the centrally placed mixing console at studio.
2x6u rack top, 2x12u bottom and 2x18u at the back of each cabinet. There's a large interconnecting hole to run cables between both parts of the cabinet.
Oak throughout, glued up, solid structure.
In the beginning of the designing process the worktop was meant to be a single thick board, but as I don't like my life to be too easy πŸ™ƒ, I modified it to be a construction of boards 'wrapped around' and joined using mitre cuts. Now the worktop is an integral part of the cabinet, making the form consistent and balanced.

A desk that I've built to fill the alcove in living room and replace a 'temporary' (as over 10 years could be named temporary πŸ€ͺ) piece of worktop that I've been using.

I designed it to be quite shallow, in mid-century style, with some relevant features for me.
The cabinet on the left will be for storing craft papers for kids (and my paper work one day...). The cabinet on the right is for my PC (now used mostly for watching cartoons...).
There's a cable channel for hiding extension lead and all the other cables (as seeing exposed cables is aggravating for me). The backs of the cabinets are recessed a bit and I added some notches for cables so the desk could be placed directly against the wall without any gap.
Under the worktop there's a keyboard tray on undermount runners.
The desk is built with quite chunky 25mm veneered MDF and solid oak lip on the front.
I used mitre joints (so called waterfall joint, as it makes the grain 'flow' seamlessly through the sides and the top) on all sides of the desk. The inside walls of the cabinets are rebated into the worktop (that was the hardest part in this build). With a chamfer on the front lip, everything gives a very smooth and harmonic transition.
It's going to match a media cabinet I've built some time ago that occupies the alcove on the other side of the fireplace.
I planned some extra features for the desk, but they will be added later on.

Another piece of furniture, a bit different to any studio desk I know. Built as an oak frame filled with oak slats and lined with fabric. Fabric is the same as panels in the destination studio to match the look.

The principle of this desk is to be as minimal as possible having eye-pleasing aesthetics and minimize negative acoustic impact on the studio. Under the worktop there's a small tray for a midi keyboard and there's a shelf for a monitor arm in the back.
For the keyboard tray I used Movento undermount runners with a synchronization device that guaranteed smooth operation.
There are 2 bays of 6u rack strips for equipment each on the top of the desk and the same in the bottom (with intention to fix power strips and blanking panels that will close the desk). There should be no hanging cables after installation). There are holes for getting cables from the midi keyboard into the desk and for the screen in the back.

The project was quite challenging and complex, but I'm really happy with how it turned out. I have had to build one piece of rack cabinet/desk out of birch plywood to test some solutions before committing to oak. I used wood glue with an extended setting time as putting everything together took a while (gluing up is one of the most stressful parts of my job, sweating a lot, ha!). Only the worktop and the keyboard tray are removable for ease of transport and easier service in the future, if needed.

A minimal desk that does more and better than most big desks.
A truly unique piece of studio furniture. 😊

Hope will like it!

That's a production desk with a keyboard drawer for newly built Suite X.
Top part of the desk is made of solid oak provided by and the base cabinets are veneered MDF by . All finished with Oil Plus 2C "Chocolate".
The keyboard - LMK2+ 88 is integral part of the desk. The drawer was quite challenging to build, as I wanted to make it as slim as possible, without visible runners and aesthetically pleasing and well integrated.
There are lids on the back that allow easy access to the internals of the desk. As the desk is in the position that it could be seen from the back (there's the entrance to the booth just behind the desk) I made sure that it is eye pleasing and complete from that perspective as well.
I added brass strips to the lids and the drawer to refine the look and mark all the interactive parts - a small detail that makes a big difference, in my opinion.
All the cables and power are coming from under the floor straight inside the base cabinets, so no cables coiling around, that's absolutely amazing 😊
The room is really well designed acoustically, technically and aesthetically. Great effect of the work of all the people involved in the project. I'm really happy that I was a small part of it!

A set of speakers that I recently finished. A very simple construction of a 12mm birch plywood box with solid oak front and back topped up with a walnut inlay. Sheep's wool felt and some polyester wadding for damping internal resonances. I added a metal grill to cover and protect the driver.
For covering the sides I used skateboard grip tape as I really like this kind of porous surface in contrast to relatively smooth wood.
Smiley is an obvious wink to the rave culture and makes them look not so serious as well.
The speakers are providing sound to my workshop at the moment, I'm really pleased with them.

This is the biggest desk I've ever built in my small workshop (I've built a bigger one, but on the site, not in the workshop). That was a challenge - as you could see in the last photo, it takes up all available space when assembled. Built for and based in Fitzrovia, central London.
The design process with (who makes a nice working environment out of a bunch of cables and piles of equipment) got us to this form of the desk.
The main scope was to fit the Avid S3 controller in the central part flush with the desk surface and to get as much rack space as possible on the sides, hence two double rack cabinets.
There's a cable channel connecting both cabinets under the worktop, in the back.
These small worktops on the sides could be lifted uncovering small storage space, which is always precious in any studio.
The top part of the desk is solid oak, bottom veneered MDF.

Having a bit of free time recently I've built a prototype of a minimalistic desk with mastering in mind. Overall I tried to break the common way of building desks using sheets of material and went for something different.

The desk is built using boards and slats. For the prototype it's birch plywood, but my intention is to use solid wood. I had to prepare all the slates from a sheet of ply. Quite a laborious way of building to be honest πŸ€ͺ. All the parts are glued together and it's is a really solid piece.

In the end I achieve very simple, clean and uniform structure. Slats diffuse the sound, so the desk tries to make a positive acoustical impact on the room (as much as a piece of furniture could do that). Form follows function.

The main space on the top accommodates 10u of equipment, there's a small worktop for mouse and keyboard, which could be removed/replaced with different one. There's possibility of fixing a shelf on the back for fitting a screen (I've just run out of ply to build it for this prototype).
The back lid allows access to the internal part of the desk.
The sides are covered from the inside with fabric, except of the back to help cooling the equipment.
Overall I'm very happy and pleased with the results and I have plans to develop this conception of desk/cabinet further - connecting few units, adding central worktop, etc.
Can't wait to built it with oak as well.

Any comments welcome πŸ€—.

That's a set of speakers that I built for myself as I needed a pair for my pc at home. These are small footprint, compact transmission line ideal for the task - they do not take much desk space, the height is perfect for ear level, full range driver gives excellent stereo imaging, even in the nearfield. Transmission line provides quite a lot of bass - as for that small driver - 3".
Built using mixture of plywood, solid oak for the front baffle and piece of walnut for the inlay.
Used mostly by my kids watching cartoons 🀣.

Recovering from an injury I had some time to finish a side project. That's set of compact mass-loaded quarter wave speakers with Markaudio CHN50 full range drivers. Solid oak front baffles, bases and terminals. 18mm MDF box, lined with pure wool felt.
Painted with my favourite stone effect paint with fleck. Oak oiled with black Rubio Monocoat oil.
Quite good speaker as for such a small and simple design. A little bit on a bright side with modest SPL, still amazing for such a small frame. Excellent stereo imaging.

The studio is a floating box, custom, tuned bass traps in the back, non parallel walls and the ceiling which is constructed in 3 sections angled differently. The studio has an absolutely quiet, efficient and invisible from the inside air condition system. There's 5.1 ATC monitoring system sitting on custom speaker stands (all of them weight almost a ton!). There is a machine room behind hidden door in the front, hidden storage behind one of the bass traps and a huge solid oak desk which is an art piece on it's own (bespoke built by me, of course πŸ˜‰).

That's how small storage units are incorporated into design of the desk. All the space is very valuable in a studio! πŸ™‚. Solid oak ❀️ desk built MatrixΒ² for
