My advice if you’re renovating while living in the house

Many of our clients live in the property while our team is working on it. The saving from not having to pay rent (while also renovating) normally outweighs the inconvenience of sharing the house with a build team, along with the associated dust and noise!

The first thing we do is offer to set up a temporary kitchen - normally a cannibalised version of their old kitchen! Generally, people want a sink, microwave, small hob, fridge and some storage space (you can buy small electric hobs cheaply online).

We always recommend plastic door covers with zips. Nothing will keep out 100% of dust but these are very helpful and go a long way to keeping the rooms you are using as normal as possible!

Recently we built a new kitchen for a lovely couple who, when we arrived on the first day, had set up a coffee stand with tea, coffee, tons of biscuits, milk etc. It was so thoughtful and kind, the team was thrilled!

There's a few things you will need to decide on at the beginning of your renovation and this is one of the biggest!

Flooring - think carefully about each room and it's use. If you have wooden or tiled flooring will you have underfloor heating?

One of the reasons you need to know this early on is because it will impact door openings, so your build team will need to know early on.

What I’d spend money on and what I’d save on

My advice is to prioritise the things you touch or see every day: door handles, light switches, worktops / surfaces. I love a well-designed handle as it gives the cupboard an elevated and more luxurious feel. Equally, if you have fallen in love with a fabric but can't stretch to upholstering the big sofa with it, have some cushions made with it instead.
