One model is useful.

A reusable equipment library is where things start to scale.

When we create equipment families, we’re not only modelling the geometry.

The family can also carry technical parameters, identification data and the information required for schedules, documentation and IFC exchange.

And not every existing piece of equipment comes with perfect manufacturer data.

In those cases, configurable generic families can be much more practical: correct overall dimensions, the information we actually know, and a structure that can be reused on the next site.

That changes the workflow. You’re no longer rebuilding the same equipment from zero every time a new site appears.

The model becomes one project.
The library becomes something you can keep using.

Laser scanning or photogrammetry?

The right choice depends on the accuracy you need, your budget, the site, and some other conditions.

If we’re just talking accuracy-wise, laser scanning is much more precise. But is it a one-size-fits-all solution that just depends on your budget? No.

Photogrammetry is cheaper and colourful, while scanners are more accurate and work in the dark.

Both methods create a point cloud in the same open formats (E57, LAS, LAZ), so the way you can view and share the output doesn’t change.

Can you combine both? Yes, and it is common: this approach can give you the best of both worlds. You can capture critical areas (such as structural columns or intricate details) via laser scanning, then use photogrammetry for simpler sections or exterior facades. Then merge everything into one point cloud during registration.

What approach does your team use most?

Why do some MEP projects stay coordinated while others generate endless clashes and rework?

Because good MEP BIM coordination starts before the model is even created.

Here are five practices that make projects easier to coordinate and less prone to rework:

1. Set the rules early

Agree on scope, LOD, naming, model structure, responsibilities, software, and information exchange before production starts.

2. Coordinate complete systems

Pipework, ductwork, cable trays, electrical containment, fire protection, structural penetrations, and ceiling spaces need to be coordinated together — not in isolation.

3. Run clash detection regularly

Detect, prioritise, assign, resolve, and verify clashes before they reach site.

4. Standardise Revit families

Accurate geometry, correct MEP connectors, useful parameters, and consistent naming improve both coordination and model performance.

5. Follow the project’s BIM standards

For UK projects, align workflows with the applicable BS EN ISO 19650 requirements, BEP, information requirements, naming conventions, and CDE processes.

Need to improve your MEP coordination workflow? BIMPROVE can support your team from model setup through clash resolution.

How many times have you heard: ‘the model doesn’t reflect reality’, ‘it’s awkward to draw in Revit’, ‘the documentation is hard to read once the model is complete’?

In our team’s experience, there’s almost always one underlying reason for this — the habit of transferring AutoCAD’s 2D logic into Revit’s 3D environment. And these are two completely different ways of thinking.

Here’s the difference:

🔹 In AutoCAD, you draw a wall separately on the plan, separately on the section, and separately on the elevation — and manually ensure that everything lines up.

🔹 In Revit, a wall is a single element. Place it once — and it will appear simultaneously on the plan, sections, elevations and in 3D.

What about documentation? Revit produces drawings of the same quality and level of detail as AutoCAD — 2D components, lines and hatching are added without any problems. This is a question of the team’s skills, not software limitations. And if something in the model looks odd, look for the cause in the workflow, not in the programme.

So the question isn’t “Revit or AutoCAD”, but “does the team understand how to work with the tool?”.

Creating a Revit family isn't just "make geometry, add parameters, done". Done properly, it's a process — and skipping steps is usually where problems show up later in a project.

Here's how our team approaches it:

🔹 Understand the Family Editor — the environment where families are built and modified. This means working with the right template, setting up reference planes correctly, and defining parameters before touching geometry.

🔹 Create the geometry — both 2D and 3D, built to actual project specifications, not just "close enough".

🔹 Assign parameters — the settings that control how the family behaves and resizes: material properties, visibility settings, and more. This is where a family becomes flexible instead of a static block.

🔹 Test and validate — load it into a real project and check that it actually behaves as intended. Adjust as needed. A family that "looks right" in isolation can still break inside a live model.

Skip any of these steps, and you end up with families that cause more rework than they save.

Need custom Revit families built to spec instead of building them in-house? That's exactly what we do — reach out and let's talk.
