Some gardens reveal themselves slowly, and this Nunhead project is a lovely example.

Stretching over 20 metres from the back door to the very end of the garden, the journey moves past a new dining terrace and rebuilt retaining wall, before arriving at a garden room tucked among the trees. Ferns and grasses soften the shade throughout, creating a real sense of woodland calm in the heart of South East London.

A garden like this needs a little time to settle in before it’s ready for its close-up.

Dining patio, outdoor kitchen, garden room, sauna, all built around how this family of four actually spends their evenings and weekends.

Tom and Nicole moved into this home two years ago with two young children. Inside had been lovingly restored. The garden hadn't caught up.

We rebuilt the connection from the kitchen door outwards: safer steps, a dining patio for six, a curved lawn and herb garden, and a hammock oasis at the very back.

For Nicole, we made sure there was a piece of Australia in there too 🌿

Growing up in a Greek family in Australia, and spending time in Greece, these weren't design principles to me—they were simply the gardens I knew and loved.

I remember terracotta pots overflowing with pelargoniums and fragrant herbs, fruit trees laden with olives, figs and pomegranates, and learning to appreciate the beauty of natural materials like limestone. They were gardens designed for outdoor living—simple, timeless and deeply connected to their surroundings.

Today, I bring many of these ideas into the gardens I design across South East London. As our climate continues to change and we spend more time outdoors, these principles feel more relevant than ever—creating gardens that are beautiful, resilient and made for everyday living.

After designing gardens across South London for the past few years, I've noticed a few common themes.

They're not "mistakes"—just decisions that are easy to make without stepping back and looking at the bigger picture. A patio that's a little too small for entertaining. Planting that's treated as an afterthought. A garden that looks wonderful in summer but lacks interest for the rest of the year.

Thoughtful garden design is about considering all of these things from the very beginning, creating a space that's not only beautiful but also works for the way you live.

Before you think about which garden room to buy - have you asked yourself how you're actually going to use it?

Short-term and long-term needs are rarely the same thing. A home office for now might need to become something else in five years. A playroom that works today might not work tomorrow.

The best garden rooms are designed to be flexible enough to evolve and integrated into the garden around them so the whole space works together. Positioning, materials, planting, views - all considered from the very beginning.
