Upgraded today from an older style fuse board to a modern RCBO consumer unit 🔧

The previous board was from an earlier edition and didn’t provide the level of protection expected by current standards. It’s now been replaced with a fully compliant RCBO board, giving individual circuit protection, improved fault detection, and much better safety overall.

All circuits tested, certified, and brought up to current regulations. Another property made safer and future-ready ⚡

EICR Observation – No Zs on Downlights

No Zs readings were obtained on metal can downlights when tested with a GU10 plug-in tester.

Fittings were removed and found to have basic insulation throughout, with CPCs cut out to the cans leaving them unearthed. Accessible connections were rectified.

Further investigation required cutting into the ceiling, where a taped joint with no earth present was found. Connection has now been remade correctly with earth continuity restored.

Installation previously left in a potentially dangerous condition.

Got called out to fit a dishwasher today, but as always decided to test everything beforehand — glad I did.

Turns out the flat had a high Ze reading and no RCD protection on the fuse board. Measured Ze at 58.4Ω on what should be a TN-S system 🚩 Definitely not right.

Had to stop the job and get the DNO involved to investigate the earthing. Just goes to show why testing first is so important — could’ve been a serious safety issue if it was just installed and left.

❌ CPCs (earths) incorrectly sleeved in blue or brown
❌ Fused spur supplies and loads completely mixed up

This isn’t just untidy work — it’s unsafe.

Another interesting EICR find today 👀

Attended a property today to carry out an Electrical Installation Condition Report and found a few classics:

• Old rewireable fuse board still in service
• A radial socket circuit wired directly into an asbestos 45A rewireable fuse
• No RCD protection anywhere on the installation
• Metal pipework not bonded

This kind of setup was common years ago but highlights why periodic inspections are so important. Lack of RCD protection and missing bonding significantly reduces the safety of the installation.

Recommendations issued for consumer unit upgrade, RCD protection, and main bonding installation to bring the system up to a safer standard.

Always worth getting your installation checked if it hasn’t been inspected in years. ⚡

⚡ EICR Find of the Day – Loose MCB Connection ⚡

During a recent EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) I discovered an MCB that was not properly connected to the busbar inside the consumer unit.

At first glance everything looked normal, but on closer inspection the breaker was not fully seated and secured onto the busbar, which could lead to:❗ Overheating❗ Arcing❗ Intermittent power loss❗ Potential fire risk

This is why a thorough inspection matters. It's not just about ticking boxes – every breaker must be properly seated, tightened, and securely connected.
