Heat recovery ventilation removes pollen, dust and particulates as standard. What it does not remove on its own is the gases coming off the traffic.

This flat is on a busy central London street, and clean air was the reason the owner wanted the system at all. So a second carbon filter was added to the supply side, before the air reaches any room in the flat.

If the road outside is why you are considering ventilation, that second stage is the thing to ask about.

Most people think a home battery is about storing sunshine. It is really about which hours of the day you buy your electricity in.

On this house the day rate is around 36p a unit and the overnight rate on a time of use tariff is around 8p. Panels alone still leave you buying the expensive hours every evening. With storage you charge overnight in winter and run on your own solar in summer.

15 panels and 20 kilowatt hours of storage, fitted in Cobham.

One of our own team had solar and battery storage fitted at his house in Cobham, and a few weeks later he opened his energy app on camera.

Before: around £80 to £90 a week. The week after: £13. Most days since: 3 or 4 pence. And the export payments were not even set up yet.

These are his own figures for his own house, read in April. Yours will be different, which is why we model your home before anyone talks about price.

Every installer the client spoke to said it could not be done. A ground source heat pump in a west London house with no access to the garden.

The answer: a road closure, 26 suspended parking bays, and a 180 tonne crane lifting a 7 tonne drilling rig over the house. It now heats the swimming pool, the jacuzzi, the underfloor heating and the hot water.

A look inside a master suite air conditioning installation.

Three branches serve the bedroom, with a plenum box splitting the supply so the air spreads across the room rather than dropping straight onto the bed. The dressing room is fed off the same circuit instead of borrowing air through an open door.

It all gets decided before the ceiling closes. If you are planning cooling for a project, ask us and we will tell you the earliest date we can install.

There is one week every summer when Britain collectively decides it needs air conditioning.

We pulled five years of UK search data to find it. The spike is not gradual. It arrives with the first properly hot day and it is close to vertical.

It is also the worst week of the year to buy. Everyone calls at once, prices are at their peak, and equipment lead times stretch from the usual 2 to 4 weeks out to 8 to 12. The people who end up waiting weeks in a heatwave are almost always the people who started looking during it.

The homes that get cooling quickly and sensibly are the ones that sorted it in the months when nobody was thinking about it.

Full analysis, including the exact week it happens each year:

Every year since 2020, the first hot day has triggered an instant explosion in UK air conditioning demand. Five years of data on the panic, the queue it builds, and how to skip it.

People imagine a solar installation is mostly about the roof. On this one, the hardest part was getting the equipment up onto the scaffold at all, because the access was a little more than a shoulder's width.

The cable runs were set out at high level either side of the chimney stacks, with the EV charger, the battery storage and the panels all leaving on one run that splits off for the different roofs. It is the sort of decision that never shows up in the finished photos and makes the whole job tidier.

Gas plus electricity was heading towards £5,600 a year. It now runs at under £3,000, year on year, with six people living in the house. Those are the owner's figures rather than ours. The battery is the part people underestimate. It decides when the house buys electricity, not just how much.

Five or six pounds a day to run a 10,000 square foot house, on electricity and heating together. Less than the price cap figure for an average UK home, for a property ten times the size. A ground source heat pump, solar and battery working as one system rather than three separate purchases.

A 1900 property in Surrey. Single glazed in places, not well insulated. The kind of house people are often told to rule out for a heat pump. Ian's has Stiebel Eltron air source units in it, and he talks us through how it has actually been to live with.
