It’s been incredibly hard to process the passing of Javier Castañón last month. A man who has meant a great deal to me since I studied at the AA and later started working there.

A number of years ago I contacted Javier for a reference for a job I was applying for. Javier was both incredibly supportive and also very clearly expressed his true hope that I would instead consider coming to teach at the AA in his department. Which I of course did.

Javier’s funeral ceremony this week at the Church of St Thomas More was a sad, inspiring and humbling experience.

Javier’s reach and influence have been felt by so many. The way he taught and worked with such kindness and empathy is something the professional architectural and academic world is still working to catch up with him on and I hope we keep striving to model his legacy. He was truly ahead of his time and will always be a hero to me.

This summer we visited in Bodmin to participate in the Lime Pointing course. It’s a material we love and already love to use in projects, but it’s something different to use and get to grips with.

Since then, we’ve been testing back in our studio to see how different lime mixes hold up against the elements. This research feeds directly back into our projects and helps us design and specify materials. More on this to come.
