AFDDs — What You Really Need to Know 🔌

There’s a lot of confusion about AFDDs (Arc Fault Detection Devices). Many people think they need to be installed on every circuit — but that’s not true.

According to BS 7671:2018 + A2:2022 (Reg 421.1.7), AFDDs are only required on single-phase circuits ≤32A supplying socket outlets in:
✅ High-rise residential buildings - (Case above London life baby)
✅ HMOs (Houses in Multiple Occupation)
✅ Premises with sleeping accommodation
✅ Buildings with a high fire risk (e.g. timber structures)
✅ Sites with irreplaceable items (e.g. museums, archives)

💡 They’re recommended (not mandatory) on other ≤32A final circuits like lighting or portable equipment circuits in higher-risk areas.

We completed this consumer unit upgrade a while back, and now that the joinery has been fitted, the final result looks clean and seamless 👌

We installed a three-phase board, ready for when the client upgrades their electrical supply in the future.
We also fitted Shelly smart meters on a sub-board, allowing the owner to monitor power consumption across several circuits — giving full visibility and control over their energy use.
