One niche after another! Microcement creates the perfect seamless cubby hole! .matieres

Our most recent project is this beautifully understated master bathroom.

The design is simple, and that’s exactly what makes it work. There’s something incredibly effective about keeping things considered and allowing the materials, proportions and details to speak for themselves.

We’ve created a complete microcement wrap across the walls, ceiling and floor, using Soie from Ad Lucem. The continuous finish brings a softness and sense of calm to the space, creating the perfect backdrop for the fixtures and fittings that will be added.

Once everything is in place, this will be a beautifully calm and elegant retreat for the homeowners.

Another project completed by us, and another space transformed with microcement.

Next up, there’s plenty of plastering to tackle, followed by an unusually small project in one of our favourite places in South Wales.

For a long time, I’ve used “I” when writing my posts on here, mainly for the sake of consistency. But it’s time for that to change.

From now on, you’ll start to see a shift from “I” to “we” — because the work we do simply couldn’t happen without the people alongside me.

Rickie has been working alongside me for many years now, and together we’ve completed many, many projects. It’s a partnership that works incredibly well. Rickie brings a calmness to my often overthinking mind, while bringing the same energy, enthusiasm and pride to every project that I do.

So, with that in mind, you’ll see a shift in our Instagram posts to “we”. Because that’s exactly what it is — we.

And speaking of we…

We recently finished this master bathroom for the excellent Studio Gennaio.

You can hopefully see from the pictures that this was quite a project — big, high and definitely tricky in places. But my goodness, what an impressive room it is!

We applied microcement to all of the walls as well as all areas of the ceiling.

1 property, 5 shower rooms, 5 shower tray formers and of course all microcement by .matieres - an epoxy free, non yellowing mineral based microcement.

Last week saw the completion of this project — five bath/shower rooms, thankfully all very close to home here in the Vale of Glamorgan.

A craie coloured microcement was incorporated alongside tiles throughout the design, creating a very different aesthetic to what you’d achieve using microcement across every surface. It’s a combination I absolutely love to see, just as much as a fully microcemented space.

All five preformed shower trays were supplied by the excellent Resin Rock. I wouldn’t recommend anyone else for our projects — their trays are specifically designed for use with microcement, making them our go-to choice for shower installations.

I’ve got a few microcement projects on the go at the moment that I’m really looking forward to sharing. In the meantime, I’ve also been keeping busy with some plastering work despite the heat! ☀️💪

This is one flat of many I’ll be working on over the next few months. It definitely threw a few interesting shapes my way, and to make things even more challenging, it’s on the third floor! 😂

This week saw the completion of a fantastic project in Alexandra Palace, London.

Over the years, I’ve continued to invest in better machinery and training so projects like this can run smoothly from start to finish. Even the London foxes, who did their best to spoil the fun by moving tools around and keeping me awake at night, couldn’t disrupt the flow! 😂

The colour used throughout is Galet – a warm off-white that creates a continuous, seamless and beautifully neutral finish across the floors, steps and walls.

Another stunning project by Gemma Fry, and one I’m incredibly grateful to have been part of.

I’m currently experiencing a huge bottleneck of work, which has meant some very long days on site trying to catch up. It’s been absolutely brutal in this heat! If you’ve been waiting for a response to any queries, please bear with me while I work my way through this intense period.

This project has been a long time coming, but it’s great to finally get it over the finish line. My microcement work on this home included several different elements: walls in the master bathroom and ensuite, a feature wall and hidden door leading through to the utility, and finally the utility itself, where I completed the floor along with another feature wall and door.

Now that the house is complete, the subtle colour palette and natural finish I’ve created sit perfectly within the overall design. The microcement adds texture and character, creating a real talking point without ever feeling overpowering. Koubi Design Rickie Jones
