September starts tomorrow, so here is the honest order to do things in.

First, stop losing it. Loft, draughts, doors and windows that no longer seal, an uninsulated floor. Cheapest work in the house and it makes everything after it cheaper.

Then heat what is left, properly. Room by room, matched to what each space actually needs, on when you are in it and off when you are not.

Then buy your energy better. Storage lets you buy overnight at around 7p instead of at the evening peak. That works in January when there is no sun at all.

Then add solar, so through the lighter months a chunk of it costs nothing.

Then hot water and controls to run the lot without you thinking about it.

Most people do that list backwards, starting with the shiny thing. Done in order, each step makes the next one smaller and cheaper.

Money on the table. What is actually open right now if you are heating a home in Wales.

Third one of these. The funding moves and most people find out after it has closed.

The October price cap is now confirmed. Whatever the headline number, remember it caps the unit rate, not your bill. What you use and when you use it still does most of the work.

0 percent VAT on energy saving materials ends 31 March 2027. Insulation, solar, battery storage and more. No word yet on an extension. On a £10,000 package that relief is worth about £2,000.

£4 million for oil and LPG homes. Welsh Government, aimed at rural and off grid households, the most expensive homes in the country to heat.

£8 million more into the Optimised Retrofit Programme, on top of over £466 million since 2020. If you rent from a housing association or council, this is the pot that pays for work on your home. Worth asking your landlord what is planned.

Nest, £5 million, for eligible households on lower incomes. Check even if you assume you do not qualify.

And for landlords, 1 October 2030. Rented homes need to reach the equivalent of EPC C, with a £10,000 per property cap on required spend.

If you are planning anything to make your home warmer, there is a deadline worth knowing about.

Right now, installing energy saving materials carries 0 percent VAT. Insulation, solar panels, battery storage and more, all with the VAT taken off.

That ends on 31 March 2027, and at the moment nobody has said whether it will be extended.

In plain terms, a £10,000 package of work costs you £10,000 today. If the relief goes and nothing replaces it, the same work becomes £12,000.

Eighteen months sounds like ages. It is one winter to decide, one spring to get quotes, and one autumn to get it done, and everybody else is working to the same clock.

There is a campaign running to ask government to extend it, and we think that is the right ask. We would just rather you knew about the date than found out afterwards.

This is not a sales pitch and there is nothing to buy here. Insulate first if that is what your house needs. Just do not accidentally pay a fifth more for it because nobody mentioned a deadline.

There is one room in your house you will notice first, and it is usually in the next three weeks.

Not December. Late September, when the heating has not gone on yet and one room is already colder than the rest of the house by the time you sit down in the evening.

Everybody has one. The extension. The conservatory. The bedroom over the garage. The front room that never quite gets there.

Here is the useful bit. If you sort that room in September, it costs you a survey and a decision. If you leave it until January, you are trying to fix it in the worst weather of the year, alongside everybody else who left it too.

Hot water is the bit everyone forgets, and it is a quarter of the energy a home uses.

Baths, showers, washing up, the tap running while somebody finds the right temperature. If your heating and your hot water share a boiler, then taking the boiler out means solving both, and any company that only talks to you about the heating has not finished the job.

The honest answer depends on the house. Sometimes it is a well insulated cylinder on a timer, charged overnight at the cheap rate and perfectly capable of lasting the day. Sometimes it is heating water on demand where the usage is genuinely light. Sometimes the existing cylinder is fine and just needs better controls and a jacket rather than replacing.

What matters is that it gets designed rather than assumed, and that whoever fits your heating is answerable for the hot water too.

We survey both together, because they are the same decision.
