π¨ βTHE TIME IS ALWAYS RIGHT TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT''
Martin Luther King Jr.
Before anything else, an important historical clarification:
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was not a Freemason.
But that doesn't mean his life existed entirely outside the Masonic world.
His father, Martin Luther King Sr., was a Prince Hall Freemason, and Freemasonry particularly Prince Hall Masonry was deeply intertwined with generations of Black civic, religious and community leadership in America.
And while we should never manufacture membership where none existed, we also don't need to make someone a Mason to recognize when their words speak beautifully to the principles we profess.
βThe time is always right to do what is right.β
Read that again from a Masonic perspective.
Not when doing right is convenient.
Not when everyone agrees with you.
Not when there is something to gain.
Not when someone is watching.
The time is always right.
We spend a tremendous amount of time in Freemasonry discussing symbols, ritual, obligations, virtues and morality.
But eventually every lesson reaches the same test:
What do you actually do with it?
Integrity is easy when it costs nothing.
Brotherly love is easy when you like the Brother.
Tolerance is easy when everyone thinks like you.
Courage is easy when there is no consequence.
The real test of our principles comes when living them becomes uncomfortable.
That is where the working tools leave the Lodge room.
That is where the ritual stops being something we recite and becomes something we live.
King wasn't a Freemason.
We shouldn't pretend otherwise.
But neither were Socrates, Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus or countless other thinkers whose words can challenge a Mason to examine himself.
Wisdom does not require a dues card.
Truth is truth wherever we find it.
And perhaps one of the most Masonic things we can do is recognize Light when we encounter it, learn from it, and then carry it into our own lives.
Because ultimately, our character isn't measured by the principles we claim to believe.
It's measured by the principles we're willing to live when living them is difficult.
