A strong focal point can completely change the way you experience a garden.
This beautifully weathered terracotta pot at Porters Lodge in Suffolk is a simple example of how effective that can be. Framed by the surrounding foliage and clipped hedging, it immediately draws your eye through the opening and gives the garden beyond a real sense of destination.
Focal points are an important part of garden design. They can lead the eye, create a pause within a view, add structure, or encourage you to move through the garden and discover what lies beyond. They don’t need to be elaborate either — a pot, sculpture, specimen plant, bench or carefully positioned tree can all work beautifully.
What I particularly like here is the simplicity. The pot sits confidently within the view without competing with the planting around it, while the warm, aged terracotta feels completely at home alongside the old brick and greenery.
Sometimes the most effective focal points aren’t the loudest. They’re simply positioned in exactly the right place.
