🚨 1,042 PPM CARBON MONOXIDE — AND THE BOILER WAS STILL WORKING. 🚨
This is exactly why we tell customers not to skip their annual boiler service.
I attended a property this morning to carry out testing on a boiler. The customer had no idea what we were about to find.
As soon as I inserted my calibrated flue gas analyser, the combustion readings began climbing rapidly.

CO in the flue products exceeded 1,000 ppm and the CO/CO₂ ratio reached 0.0121.
The readings became so high that I removed my analyser before I could obtain a final stable reading, rather than risk damaging its CO sensor
⚠️ The boiler was still operating. That doesn't mean it was operating correctly.
After carrying out the necessary maintenance and corrective work, I carried out further combustion testing to ensure the appliance was operating correctly.
This customer was extremely fortunate that the problem was identified.
This is why an annual boiler service is far more than just “giving the boiler a clean.”
A proper service allows a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect the appliance, check its combustion, identify deterioration or faults and make sure it is operating safely and correctly.

🔥 Heating working? That doesn't necessarily mean everything is OK.
🔧 Boiler not showing a fault code? That doesn't necessarily mean everything is OK.

Just finished for the day… and what a week it's been! 🔧🔥💧

I've finally put the tools down after what has been an incredibly varied week of gas, plumbing and leak detection work.

It's been one of those weeks where genuinely no two jobs have been the same.

I've dealt with plumbing leaks that weren't coming from where they were originally suspected, hidden water ingress requiring proper leak detection and investigation, boiler and gas faults, emergency call-outs, and plenty of situations where finding the actual cause has been half the battle.

That's probably the part of the job I enjoy the most — fault finding and diagnostics. I love arriving at a problem, working through it logically and eventually getting to the bottom of what's actually going on.

But something else I've realised this week is just how much I enjoy the people side of this job.

I love talking to people, hearing their stories and finding out about what they do. You meet people from completely different walks of life, and sometimes a call-out becomes about a little more than just fixing what's broken.

This week I met a gentleman who had recently lost his wife. We got talking and it became clear that sometimes he simply needed somebody to have a chat with. Before I left, I gave him my number and told him that if he ever feels like he needs someone to talk to, he can give me a ring.

It was only a small gesture, but that interaction has stayed with me.

We spend our working lives rushing from one job to the next, but sometimes taking an extra ten minutes to listen to somebody can be just as important as the reason you were called there in the first place.

So after plenty of miles, some long days, gas faults, plumbing repairs, leak detection, emergency call-outs and a lot of problem solving, that's another week finished.

A really interesting week — but the people I've met have probably been the best part of it.

Now it's time to put the tools down and enjoy the rest of the weekend. 🍻
