Our Principal Landscape Architect, Kathryn Dunk, attended a really informative walking tour courtesy of ProCon Leicestershire and Leicester City Council on 1 October. 🚶♀️
It was great to see some of the lesser-known pockets of her home city, away from the Highcross and Clock Tower, and to think about the opportunities and challenges facing Leicester city centre.
A key discussion was around what type of developments should be brought forward in the city centre, and how this can work alongside other funding initiatives and income streams. There is clearly a need for more housing, but also for the facilities and amenities that create sustainable, vibrant neighbourhoods - places that work for both living and working, as well as for leisure and play.
The group explored how thoughtful public realm can help knit individual sites together, creating a more cohesive and connected city centre.
It was great to finish the tour at Phoenix Leicester and see the venue being so well used on a Thursday evening - a fantastic example of the role that culture and leisure can play in bringing people into the city centre.
A big thank you to ProCon Leicestershire, Grant Butterworth (LCC Head of Planning), Andrew Smith (LCC Director, Planning, Transport and Economic Development), David Beale (LCC Development Manager) and their teams for an interesting and thought-provoking afternoon.
Great to see some familiar faces, as well as plenty of new ones in the crowd.
