The evenings are drawing in, but that doesn't mean your time outside has to end.
It's still warm enough to sit out, you just need a bit of light to see you through.

Festoon lights are one of the simplest ways to stretch out those evenings, adding a warm glow that makes a garden feel inviting long after the sun's gone down.

What do you do with a new build garden that's just soil, a slope and a few mature trees?

That was the starting point for this project in Ordsall. The clients weren't sure where to begin, but once I understood what they wanted from the space, the potential was clear.

Ever wondered why a patio starts sinking or cracking a few years after it's laid?

In this video I talk about two things that go wrong during the build phase, after the design is already sorted.

> First, patios, paths and driveways need the right sub-base underneath them, not just enough of it, but the correct type.

> Second, areas earmarked for planting need to be kept clear of machinery and foot traffic during construction. Compacted soil is hard for roots to grow through, and that causes problems for plants long after the build is finished.

Good design sets the plan. A careful build protects it.

Not every path in a garden should be the same width.

A main route needs to carry real use: two people walking together, a wheelbarrow, a trip to the bins in the rain. That needs proper width and a surface that holds up.

A path winding through a border is doing a different job. It's there to slow you down, bring you close to the planting, make you look. Too wide and it stops feeling like a path through a garden and starts feeling like a driveway.

Getting this right means thinking about what each path is actually for before you decide how wide it should be.

Did your garden actually get used this summer, or was it too hot to sit out in for most of it? A lot of clients have said the same thing this year, and with this kind of heat rumoured to become the norm rather than the exception, it's worth asking whether gardens need to be designed differently now.

One simple thing we can all do is plant a tree. There are options even for small gardens, and they cool a space in a way few other things can.

Frazzled plants this summer? You're not alone.

The drought has been hard on gardens across the country, but not every plant has struggled the same way. Mediterranean plants have coped well. Ferns and other woodland natives have really felt the strain.

With more dry summers forecast, it might be time to rethink what we're planting and where. In the video I talk through what's worked, what hasn't, and how to plan a garden that can handle drier conditions without losing its character.

Here are a few plants to consider:

Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’
Verbena bonariensis
Sedum (Hylotelephium) ‘Autumn Joy’
Cornus (Dogwood)
Stipa tenuissima

As well as the old favourites Lavender and Rosemary.

And if you are looking for a small tree I would suggest Amelanchier lamarckii as it provides seasonal interest from Spring right through to autumn when it ends the year in a blaze of colour.

Wrong plants?

Most of us have done it. You go in for a bag of compost and come out with three plants you hadn't planned for. A few months later, two of them are sulking and one has already gone.

It usually isn't bad luck. It's that the plant was chosen in the garden centre rather than in the garden.

In this video I share three things worth checking before you buy, so your money goes on plants that will actually do well where you put them.
